Critter Crossing Rehabilitation
05/15/2020

Critter Crossing Rehabilitation

Baby Wildlife 101:

-Raccoons: This time of year, baby Raccoons are becoming more mobile and exploring during the day while mom is resting. DO NOT touch them. Leave them where they are. Unless they are injured, lethargic, or unresponsive they do not need help. If they appear to need help, contact a wildlife rehabilitator BEFORE securing them. You may see adult raccoons during the daytime as well. Likely, it’s just a hungry mom trying to keep up with her demanding babies. Unless the adult is wobbly or falling over, it does not need help!

-Cottontails: Cottontail kits do not fair well in rehabilitation. If you find a nest, leave it alone. If you find a bunny pulled from the nest, if it is uninjured, put it back in the nest. If you have concerns about your dogs getting into the nest, leash walk your dog for 3 weeks until they move on OR place a laundry basket upside down on the nest with a hole cut in it that is small enough that the mom rabbit can get into, but the dog cannot. Weigh it down with a large rock or brick. Remember, mom rabbits typically only come to feed once just before dawn and once just after dusk, so you likely will not see her. This is normal, they are being smart and discreet as to keep their nest location a secret from predators. Also, a bunny that is about the size of a tennis ball, with erect ears and open eyes, does NOT need your help and is old enough to be on its own. When they start venturing from the nest, they will “freeze up” at the sight of a predator (including humans), this does not mean they need help. Leave them alone.

-Opossums: You may see more Opossums during the daytime as they are breeding and having babies. If you see one get hit by a car or notice one hit on your daily commute, pull over, put your hazards on and safely check to 1) confirm that it is dead and not just “playing dead” 2) see if it has a pouch on it’s belly and if the pouch has babies in it. If there are babies in the pouch, gently pluck them from the teats and put them in a box or tote with blankets and an external heat source that they can move away from if they get too warm (a warm water bottle or rice bag works fine). Then contact a wildlife rehabilitator immediately.

-Birds: Baby birds can be re-nested if you find one on the ground that is uninjured and you know where the nest is. If renesting isn’t an option, keep them in a quiet place in a cozy box with a heating pad on low underneath the box itself until you are able to contact a licensed bird rehabilitator. If you see a baby bird hopping around on the ground with quite a few feathers, you’re likely seeing a fledgling that is just learning how to fly. You can always take a picture or video of it and send it to a wildlife rehabilitator for confirmation, but don’t touch it or pick it up.

-Fawns: Momma deer is always nearby, even if you can’t see her. May-June you may notice a fawn on its own nestled away, or as they get older you may notice them wandering around or playing on their own. LEAVE THEM ALONE. Unless they are injured, laying near a dead doe, or have flies on them, they are fine. Mom purposely keeps her distance to avoid drawing attention to where her baby is hiding.

*DO NOT GIVE ANY FOOD OR WATER TO ANY WILDLIFE UNLESS ADVISED TO DO SO BY A WILDLIFE REHABILITATOR. More often than not, by feeding or giving water you are doing more harm than good without the proper diet, tools, and technique.*

For a complete list of Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators in Michigan, listed by county, visit the link below:
http://www.michigandnr.com/dlr/

Remember, Wildlife Rehabilitators do not work FOR the DNR, they are funded solely by private donations and out-of-pocket. They do not have the time or resources to go “out on calls” and need your understanding, cooperation and assistance in order to help wildlife in need. :)
