Short-eared Owls are present but declining in Minnesota. They are occasionally spotted at flood control impoundments in the Middle Snake Tamarac Rivers Watershed District. Today was one of those memorable occasions. A group of 4 spent the afternoon loafing, hunting, preening and just soaking up the sun despite sub-zero temperatures. Photo © HVHughes

According to Birds in Minnesota (Janssen, 2019), Snowy Owls are regular migrants and irruptive winter visitors in Minnesota.

"Uncommon" to "unusual" - they are best represented in Kittson, Marshall and Roseau Counties.

This season, they've been reported in the "usual" places in NW Polk, west Marshall, Kittson and Red Lake Counties. Look for them perched on power poles fences and buildings, in fields and pastures, near airports and golf courses and ... atop trees.

Send us an email with details of your sightings (date, time, location and photo). Thank you

They are uncommon to occasional permanent residents in western and southern MN. Look for them along roadsides at flood control impoundments, pastures and CRP grasslands. photo © HvHughes

NW Minnesota is a great destination for birds and people who want to see them. Vince and Ramya Winstead traveled from NYC to spend Thanksgiving with Bob and Sheila Winstead in rural Roseau - where they enjoyed good company and good looks at several avian visitors from the boreal forests - including Pine Grosbeaks - and a pair of resident Pileated Woodpeckers. photos ©VWinstead
