An album created by Lydia Bodnar-Balahutrak was donated to our library collection by the artist herself. This beautifully assembled album pairs artwork by Lydia Bodnar-Balahutrak with poetry written by well-known Ukrainian poets, which the artist translated into English. The combination of poetry and visual art create a unique and powerful experience for the reader. The album also includes biographical data and an artist statement in both Ukrainian and English.
The album cover features her artwork titled 𝐘𝐚𝐤𝐛𝐲 𝐓𝐲 𝐙𝐧𝐚𝐯 ("If You Had Only Known"), a mixed media collage that incorporates the original Ukrainian text written by Ukrainian poet and writer Ivan Franko. This collage belongs to a broader series of works which explore memory, culture, and national identity.

This donation holds a special meaning for us, as Ms. Bodnar-Balahutrak visited our library in April 2025 to present a slideshow of her works. This unique album makes a wonderful addition to our library.

To learn more about the artist's work, please visit her website at

Dear Ukrainian Library,
I discovered your library last year while conducting research on Ukrainian poetry related to rushnyky. During my visits, I found several books and resources that proved immensely valuable to my research.

The library’s collection is remarkably rich, encompassing works published both in Ukraine and internationally, particularly in the United States. Beyond the richness of the collection, I was deeply touched by the warm, helpful, and welcoming atmosphere I encountered.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for your generosity and support. I will be very happy to keep you informed about the progress of my research project and to share its developments with you.

With my warmest thanks and best wishes,

On September 11, 2026, the Ukrainian Cultural Center (UCC) Library staff was honored to welcome several members of the local Detroit chapter of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA), who visited to make a generous book donation.
The donated book, 1925–2026: A Century of Commitment — The UNWLA Story, written by Marta Kichorowsky Kebalo, was presented to the library. This voluminous and detailed work chronicles the 100-year history of the UNWLA, the oldest and largest Ukrainian women’s organization in North America.

Our library staff took this opportunity to present the Soyuz Ukrainok members with a portrait of Viktoria Roshchyna (1996-2024), the Ukrainian journalist who died while in Russian captivity. The portrait was created by Kyiv artist Anna Sirosh to honor Viktoria’s life and work. We are deeply grateful to the Soyuz Ukrainok for their generosity and for helping to enrich the UCC Library’s collection. The newly donated book is now on display and available to our readers.

1925–2026: A Century of Commitment — The UNWLA Story)

On September 18, 2026, the Ukrainian community gathered at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Cultural Center to pay our final respects and to say goodbye to our dear friend and supporter, Lesia Florchuk.

There were many tears, but also moments of joy and gratitude as family members and community leaders shared memories of Lesia and spoke about the impact she had on their lives and on our community.
Lesia, we will miss you greatly! Your memory will stay with us forever!
We extend our deepest sympathies to her husband, Bohdan, and to the entire family during this difficult time.
