Wow!!!

State Department staff in Beijing was alarmed: Elaine Chao, Mitch McConnell's wife, was headed to China & planning meetings with Chinese officials that involved her family-which has hundreds of millions of $ in business interests in China.

The trip was abruptly canceled by Ms. Chao after the ethics question was referred to officials in the State and Transportation Departments and, separately, after The New York Times and others made inquiries about her itinerary and companions.

"The company was founded by a Black entrepreneur named W.T. Stevens back in the 1990's, but he died in 2002. His daughter, however, Rhonda Grayer, now serves as vice president. She works as a team with her husband, Jeff Grayer, who serves as a project manager for the company. Both are natives of Flint, Michigan, and Jeff is also a former NBA player who played for the Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks for more than 10 years.

On getting the contract

In a recent exclusive interview with TNJ.com, Jeff said, “This is home for me and my family and I wasn't going to sit back and do nothing as a person or as a businessman.” He added, “This is the biggest project our company has ever done and as a result of the water line contract our gross revenues have increased by about 70 percent.”

He also says that they expect to have 6,000 water lines replaced in the city by the end of the year. “The target is to have all 18,000 lead corroded residential pipes replaced by December 2019,” he said.

In a separate interview with TheHubFlint.com, Rhonda comments, “It is really exciting, and the most important part of it is the opportunity to employ people who may not have had other opportunities." "

Color Of Change

In 1938 civil rights activist and poet Langston Hughes wrote his chilling poem “Kids Who Die” which illuminates the horrors of lynchings during the Jim Crow era. Now, Hughes’ vivid poetry is being featured in a three minute video created by Frank Chii and @Terrance Green and narrated by Danny Glover. It is a startling reminder that the assault on Black lives did not end with the Jim Crow era.

SOA Watch Labor Caucus: SE Michigan Chapter

A reflection from our union brother Lonnie Everett from UAW Local 686 Lockport, New York on his participation in the 2015 SOA Watch Labor Caucus Mobilization to the Stewart Immigration Detention Center and the gates of Fort Benning, GA.

I was amazed and enlightened by the trip. The amount of information and the format compared to bustrips I've been on in the past. On the bus we got a good backdrop on the fundamentals of what the weekend was about as we went from different struggles, Civil and Human Rights, Immigration and Citizenship, the School to Prison Pipeline, and topped off with Grace Boggs.

To see and be apart of the energy as we walked towards the Detention Center and the Labor Caucus at the end of the night was inspiring because it brought full circle the struggles we face daily in communities across this country but people put a different name on it. To be at the Gates and do the funeral procession brought real time thoughts of Police brutality and the intentional socioeconomic guerrilla warfare that pushes our people to the industrial prison complex and death.

This clarified the importance of finding solutions to immigration so it can't be used as a excuse for job loss, the importance of vigilance for prisoners who have run a foul of the law or not but end up in a penal system that is regarded as a means to cure what ails us all the while advising its power and looking more like modern day slavery. Ultimately it signified the fact that we need a sense of urgency in leadership across this world that focuses on the fight against the atrocities of people in a state of socioeconomic oppression.

COALITION RESPONDS TO MELENDEZ SENTENCING

Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality spokesperson Kenneth Reed released this statement in response to the sentencing by Wayne County Circuit Court Vonda Evans of former Inkster police officer William Melendez, who received a sentence of 13 months to 10 years in prison for assaulting citizen Floyd Dent during a traffic stop last year. He had been convicted in November of 2015 of two felonies: misconduct in office and assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

"The Coalition is gratified that former police officer William Melendez, who had similar allegations in the past when he was with the Detroit Police Department, has been sentenced by Judge Evans. Officers should not go from municipality to municipality to engage in misconduct and abusive practices, and the decision of the jury in this case, combined with Evans's sentencing, sends precisely the message that needs to be sent: police officers are servants of the people with one sole mission: to protect and serve. Also, police cultures that allow for this kind of abuse by officers have to change, or the leadership will have to be replaced as was the case with Inkster Police Chief Vicki Yost, who resigned in the wake of these now-proven allegations against Melendez. Departments like Inkster that fail to be transparent will not be able to hide behind their tactics in light of evidence and the truth. We continue to stand with Mr. Dent and his family, and we are pleased that they are receiving some measure of justice at this difficult time in their lives."
