Three WCS elementary students were recognized at the 2026 Little Inventors Celebration at the Macomb Intermediate School District on May 28.

Harper Cady from Black Elementary, Emma Ricketts from Siersma Elementary, and Kinsley Wright from Lean Elementary were three of 13 students chosen to have their invention idea brought to life through the Little Inventors program sponsored by the MISD and Little Inventors.

Through the Little Inventors program, 4th grade students in Macomb County were challenged to invent something that is inspired by an animal or designed to help an animal, through the "Wild Ideas! Forest Floors to Ocean Shores" challenge. Students are then paired up with a maker (designer/artist), to collaborate to bring the student's invention idea to life.

Harper's invention idea "Turtle-Tastic Bag" was brought to life by Anton Steenken from Little Inventors; Emma's invention idea "Flower Outfit" was brought to life by Abigail Carballo from the College of Creative Studies; and Kinsley's invention idea "Giraffe Hat" was brought to life by Newlab Detroit.

Emma and Kinsley are students in Nicole Sullivan's STEM class and Harper is a student in Kristin Imbrunone's STEM class.

Nice work Emma, Kinsley, and Harper!

WCS Community,

Two years ago, when I interviewed to serve as the Superintendent of WCS, I talked about a process I called “Cabinet Instructional Visits.” The purpose of these visits was for me and my team to spend time in learning spaces across the district, analyze trends, and then develop next steps in our district’s effort to continuously improve our schools.

I am proud to share this year’s Instructional Report, which I hope you will find it informative and easy to read. For those interested in a translated version of the document or to read last year’s report, you can find a copy on the Superintendent’s page of our website.

I hope that once you have had time to review the document that you’ll be as optimistic as I am about the future of our district.

All the best,
Dr. John C. Bernia, Jr.
Superintendent of Schools

Congratulations to the Lego Robotics teams from Siersma Elementary and Wilde Elementary for their amazing accomplishments at the recent FIRST LEGO League competition.

Siersma's team, The Ancient Explorers, earned three different awards:
- Robot Performance award - This award is given to the team that scores the highest during the Robot Game portion of the competition. This award celebrates a team's ability to design, build, program and operate a robot that can successfully complete missions on the robot game table.
- Robot Design award - The award is given to the team that uses outstanding programming principles and solid engineering practices to develop a robot that is mechanically sound, durable, efficient, and highly capable of performing the challenge missions.
- Champions award - This is the highest honor a team can receive at a competition. It recognizes a team that demonstrates excellence in all areas of FIRST LEGO League.

Both Wilde teams, The Shining Emeralds and The Haunted Hamburgers, received:
- FIRST LEGO League Core Values Award - This award recognizes teams that demonstrate Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun through outstanding collaboration, enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and respect for others throughout the competition.
Congratulations to Coach Brandy Bishop, who received the Coach/Mentor Award for leadership and guidance that exemplify these same Core Values.

We are so proud of our Siersma and Wilde students and their coaches for representing WCS and for making our district proud!

The secondary Peer-to-Peer Showcase was recently held at the Administration Building, and was a wonderful celebration of the growth, connection and impact of our Peer-to-Peer programs throughout the year. Senior students shared meaningful experiences and personal stories that highlighted the friendships, inclusion, and confidence built through these programs. Students were presented with certificates recognizing their dedication to the program. WCS is proud of the positive difference our students continue to make in each other's lives every day.
