Trivia Tuesday! Picture this: a severe storm is rolling through. Beneath the dark storm base, you notice a ragged, wispy cloud hanging low and looking vaguely menacing. It's irregular, torn-looking, and seems disconnected from the main storm structure. What kind of cloud are you seeing?

A) Funnel cloud
B) Wall cloud
C) Scud cloud
D) Portal to another dimension

On Memorial Day, we pause to remember the men and women who gave everything in service to this country.

To every veteran, every Gold Star family, and every community member carrying the weight of that loss today, we honor you and we are grateful.

As a reminder our administrative office is also closed today. We will resume normal hours on Tuesday. As always, we will respond to any emergent situations.

Fifteen years ago today, a tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri, killing 161 people in minutes. It remains one of the deadliest tornadoes in American history.

Last month, a tornados touched down in Clinton and Belton and reminds us that severe weather is not a history lesson. It is a present reality for every community in this region.

We remember Joplin today. We also ask you to do one thing: know where you will go when the sirens sound. Not someday. Now.

Whether you live in a house, a mobile home, an RV, a skoolie, a very ambitious shipping container, or something you built with reclaimed materials, duct tape, and determination Johnson County EMA has one thing to say: we see you, and we want you to stay safe.

Many things we call home do not provide adequate protection from a tornado. This is not a judgment. It is physics.

If you don’t live in a sturdy house, preferably with a basement or storm shelter, and a tornado warning is issued for your area, you need to get out and get safe. Identify a nearby sturdy building or storm shelter before severe weather hits. Know your plan before the sirens sound.

Your home is your home, and we are here for all of it. Let's make sure you know when it’s time to go.

Just completed our first water rescue of this rain event on NE E Highway at the Blackwater River. One person was safely retrieved from floodwater by rescue boat after driving around barricades that had closed the roadway due to high water.

Barricades are placed for a reason. Floodwaters are dangerous, unpredictable, and can quickly sweep away a vehicle.

Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
