Established in 1979, the Johnson County Fire Protection District is a tax based entity that serves 525 square miles in the eastern two-thirds of Johnson County, Missouri excluding the cities of Knob Noster and Warrensburg. Governed by a three person elected Board of Directors, the District is a 24-hour per day service with a full-time Chief and Assistant Chief, a full-time Captain, three full-time

Firefighters, and more than 130 volunteer members from diverse backgrounds. The District has twelve stations located in or near Burtville, Centerview, Chilhowee, Columbus, Cornelia, Fayetteville, Knob Noster, Leeton, Valley City and Warrensburg. Four full-time firefighting personnel are stationed at the District Headquarters in Warrensburg. These personnel are on duty Monday-Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM and respond throughout the entire District to supplement the response of the volunteer personnel. The District responds to various types of fire related incidents and also provides rescue services for motor vehicle accidents and as needed for other rescue related incidents. The District’s Station 11 provides water rescue services for Johnson County. Public fire safety training is available for schools, public service organizations, youth groups and other community events. The Fire-Weather Safety House is utilized for a hands on training approach in fire safety and severe weather training. Providing modern innovative fire suppression to all citizens of the District remains the primary focus of the District. Training of fire personnel and public education/awareness are two of the methods employed to help achieve this goal. With the continued support of the public the Fire District will continue to change allowing equipment to be purchased and upgraded to provide the dedicated men and women of the volunteer force the best equipment to complete the various tasks required to provide service to the entire District.

Just completed our first water rescue of this rain event on NE E Highway at the Blackwater River. One person was safely retrieved from floodwater by rescue boat after driving around barricades that had closed the roadway due to high water.

Barricades are placed for a reason. Floodwaters are dangerous, unpredictable, and can quickly sweep away a vehicle.

Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Captain Vernon Collett of the Johnson County Fire Protection District was honored this weekend during the 45th National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, held May 2-3, 2026, in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where his name was formally added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

The memorial, located on the campus of the National Emergency Training Center, is the nation’s official tribute to firefighters who have died in the line of duty. This year, 204 firefighters from across the country were honored during the annual weekend of remembrance hosted by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Battalion Chief Larry Eggen attended the ceremonies in Emmitsburg on behalf of the District and the Collett family.

“The loss of these firefighters is felt most deeply by the families and loved ones left behind. They were parents, partners, colleagues and friends who will forever be remembered for their bravery and their devotion to duty,” said National Fallen Firefighters Foundation CEO Victor Stagnaro in the Foundation’s official release.

Captain Collett died in the line of duty on March 8, 2025, while battling a natural cover fire. He served the Johnson County Fire Protection District for 29 years and was assigned to the District's Station 6 near Valley City, where he served as Captain since 2011. He was the first line of duty death in the District’s history.

“Captain Collett’s name being added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial is a solemn and permanent recognition of his service and sacrifice,” said Fire Chief Larry Jennings. “He was devoted to protecting this community, and his legacy will continue to be felt in every corner of this District.”

The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend included a candlelight service on Saturday evening and a memorial service on Sunday morning, bringing together families, fire service members, and supporters from across the nation to honor the fallen.

Captain Collett’s name now joins hundreds of others etched into the National Memorial as part of a permanent record of firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

You don’t see this every day.

On Saturday, crews responded to a crash in the 200 block of SW 2 Highway that left a vehicle in an unusual position. The driver sustained only minor injuries.

Due to the instability of the vehicle, firefighters used stabilization struts to secure it before safely removing the driver.

A reminder that even routine drives can take unexpected turns. We’re thankful this one ended with a good outcome.

We could not be more proud to see the Johnson County Volunteer Fire Auxiliary recognized as the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri Auxiliary’s Auxiliary of the Year. This group shows up, puts in the work, and supports our firefighters and community in ways that do not always make headlines but always make a difference.

This recognition is well earned, and we are grateful every day for the people behind it. Congratulations to an incredible Auxiliary. We are proud to stand alongside you.
