Preserving food at home is a wonderful way to extend your summer vegetable garden's bounty throughout the year, but it is important to follow all recommended safety protocols to avoid illness and spoilage.

A message from the Fauquier Education Farm:
What’s been happening at the Farm:
On Tuesday, we had just a couple of our wonderful Super volunteers, who worked with Nancy and Sam to harvest lettuce and cucumbers in our high tunnels. It came to 338 lbs,
On Wednesday, we had an outstanding group from the Mountain Vista Governor’s School who put down the landscape fabric over this 300 x 50 foot patch of cover crop. We also had another outstanding group of much younger kids from the St James Episcopal School summer camp who planted several kinds of winter squash. They planted butternut, delicata, spaghetti squash, long necked pumpkins and even some candy roasters. We need to give a special shootout to the 4 volunteers, most of them Master Gardeners, plus Sam and Nancy who got everything ready for the plantings. But our gratitude needs to go to all of the kids that worked hard to help us. This No-Till practice we use can be called regenerative agriculture and doing it with a workforce of young people helps ensure that we're helping to create that next generation of fully engaged citizens who are aware of the labor that goes into growing food and value giving their time and effort to help our neighbors in need. In addition, Chick-fil-A hosted a Spirit Day fundraiser for the Fauquier Education Farm. Special thanks to Chick-fil-A and those of you that helped support the Ed farm by using the ‘code’ when placing your orders.
On Thursday, our volunteers picked 83 baskets of lettuce and kale, plus some cucumbers from the greenhouse. The 1743 lbs of greens were spread out to our network of food banks. Our season donation total is now up to 4049 lbs.
On Saturday, our volunteers planted 3 very long rows with sweet potatoes and 2 more rows with two varieties of summer squash. That is going to be lots of tons of healthy nutrition from the work of our generous volunteers.

Next week:
It's that time of year when we need to cover a couple patches of cover crop for our No Till demonstrations. We will be bringing in some very large harvest on Monday and Thursday mornings, on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings we'll be putting down landscape fabric over some cover crops to prepare them to be planted with cut flowers and watermelon the following week. We'll start at 9AM each day, it ought to be a glorious week to come help us on the farm!

Monday, June 1st, @ 9:00am
Tuesday, June 2nd, @ 9:00am
Wednesday, June 3rd, @ 9:00am
