Big shout out to the Alabama Power Company employees and our Police, Fire, and Public Works employees for restoring power and getting Main Street open again last night after this big tree took down the power lines across the street from the car wash. 🙌

Over the past several months and beyond, the City of Warrior, along with our residents and business owners, has been working hard to build positive momentum for our community. Together, we are creating a city that we can continue to take pride in for many years to come. The results of those efforts are visible, and we thank you.

Because of that, I want to make our citizens aware of a matter that has generated serious concern among residents, business owners, and city leaders.

A proposal is currently under consideration by the Blount County Commission for a construction and demolition (C&D) landfill to be located on Sibleyville Road. The property is located in Blount County, but it’s adjacent to the county line and adjacent to the Warrior city limits.

One of the primary concerns related to this proposal is the likelihood of a significant increase in heavy truck and trailer traffic traveling through Warrior every day — particularly along Hayden Road, Trafford Road, and especially through the middle of town on Main Street.

There are essentially three routes to reach the proposed landfill location, and two of them run through Warrior. As your mayor, I am deeply concerned about the potential impact that such industrial traffic could have on:

• Traffic congestion
• Roadway safety
• The condition and durability of our streets
• The atmosphere and revitalization of Main Street
• Existing businesses
• Future economic development efforts
• The everyday quality of life in our community

Main Street is the heart of Warrior! We have worked too hard and come too far to improve and strengthen our community only to see it potentially transformed into a truck route.

Two days ago, I met one-on-one with Commissioner Allen Armstrong regarding this matter. Yesterday, I met with him again along with about 35 concerned citizens and residents of the Sibleyville community. On both occasions, Commissioner Armstrong was gracious with his time and forthcoming with information regarding the proposed landfill. I appreciate his time and the information he shared.

I strongly encourage Warrior residents, business owners, and anyone who cares about the future of our community to become informed and involved in this process.

The Blount County Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing and vote on this proposal next Thursday, June 4, at 9:00 AM, at the Blount County Courthouse, located at 220 Second Avenue East in Oneonta.

I encourage citizens to attend and respectfully make your voices heard. If you are unable to attend, you may contact the county commissioners using the phone numbers listed on the Blount County Commission website. Those phone numbers are posted in the comments below. Written comments may also be mailed to the address listed above. Their email addresses are not on their website.

I believe it is important for our community to stand up, speak out, and participate in this important issue that could have a long-lasting impact on Warrior’s future.
