There is a blur to the seasons, like the fast-passing scenery glimpsed out a car window, or a thought half-finished before distraction takes one's attention to other things. To slow down, to bring clarity to your perceptions of the years passing and invite observation and discovery of the things that have always been around you; you'll find that a guided phenology hike is more rewarding than it seems. Our naturalist will take you steadily along Karst Trail, revealing what exists ephemerally, in a cyclical season that comes once a year. There will be hints of changes to come, and clues of the seasons that have passed, and just as the forest watches the otherwise unnoticed wonders of August, you might see changes within yourself as the calm reflection of the season gives a quiet pause to the busy schedules and bustle of your week.

August Amazements, is one of many phenology guided hikes happening this year at Rickwood Caverns State Park, and you can join us this Saturday the 25th, to experience it for yourself!

You Might have spotted one of these little fellas around the park, but they are known as cherry millipedes! As decomposers they largely eat rotting plant matter and are somewhat unassuming with their small size, tendency to curl up if bumped, and meandering movement on their 30-31 pairs of legs, but don’t let that fool you! Not only will they glow blue under a black light, but their name come from their main defense against predators: cyanide which just so happens to smell like cherries or almonds to some people! Don’t be afraid though, they make such a small amount that they are not considered dangerous to humans!

Snakes might seem spooky to some, but these awesome creatures play an important role in the environment, eating mice, other rodents, and small prey.

While our teacher creature is quite content to say "hi" to those passing through the nature center from his enclosure, this World Snake Day, remember to keep a safe distance and only wave hello when admiring snakes in the wild!
