Mount Airy

Mount Airy Colonial home of John Tayloe II in Richmond Co., Virginia. Completed in 1764. A private home today. A private family home. Built by Col.

Welcome to Mount Airy, the ancestral home of the Tayloe family, located in the Northern Neck of Virginia overlooking the sprawling Rappahannock River. John Tayloe (completed 1758) and designed by the noted Virginia architect, John Ariss, Mount Airy’s significance “rests chiefly on it’s architectural distinction being one of the few stone houses built in Virginia during the 18th century, and repres

ents the first instance in the Colonies of the achievement of the ideal full Palladian villa, with dependent wings connected to the main house by quadrant passages.” Francis Lightfoot Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his wife Rebecca Tayloe are buried on the estate. Mount Airy has the earliest surviving Orangery in North America.

“On Thursday last was married Francis Lightfoot Lee, Esq; to Miss Rebecca Tayloe, daughter of the Honourable John Tayloe, Esq; a Lady whose many amiable accomplishments, and inestimable virtues, render her a very worthy object of affection, and present the most pleasing prospect of permanent happiness in the marriage state.”

In 1769, Francis Lightfoot Lee married Rebecca Tayloe from Mount Airy. That same year, the building of the Menokin house would begin as part of Rebecca’s wedding dowry from her father, John Tayloe II.
Francis and Rebecca lived at Menokin until their passing in 1797.

On this day, February 27, 1766, Francis Lightfoot Lee signed the Westmoreland Resolves (aka, the Leedstown Resolutions) that was drafted by his brother, Richard Henry Lee.
The Resolves stated Westmoreland County residents’ opposition to the Stamp Act that taxed American colonists on all printed materials. This document was a precursor of what was to come in the colonies’ growing resentment towards Great Britain. The Westmoreland Association—which included the signers of the Resolves— was one of the first groups who officially organized to resist policies levied by Great Britain. More organizations and declarations followed.

It’s the start of a new year and now officially the 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence! Menokin is home to Francis Lightfoot Lee, who was one of 56 signers of the Declaration.
Signing the Declaration of Independence was an act of resistance where American colonists declared their independence from the British monarchy. This was a significant moment in American history from where a new nation was founded, but the Declaration initially did not include everyone in this promise for freedom. America’s history is varied, but throughout it, we’ve seen people and movements push through barriers and seek to create a more perfect union. That continues into today.
At Menokin, we’ll be highlighting Northern Neck stories of self-emancipation and revolutionary acts of protest— from Francis Lightfoot Lee’s contributions to moments of resistance by the NNK’s black and enslaved community— from the American Revolution and beyond.

Follow us for future programs and events happening at Menokin this year! We hope everyone’s excited for the 250th and are making plans to explore the many historic sites, cultural centers, and museums in the nation!

This is unacceptable and goes against everything this organization claims to stand up for. Selling your soul for data center cash. Friends of the Rappahannock do better.

You may have heard the big news, and we’re thrilled to share it again! 🎉

Friends of the Rappahannock has received the largest corporate investment in our 40-year history: an extraordinary commitment from STACK Infrastructure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to fuel our work protecting and restoring the Rappahannock River.

This gift reflects a powerful belief in FOR’s leadership, our mission, and the impact we deliver across the watershed. It also positions us to do even more for clean water, healthy ecosystems, and resilient communities.

In keeping with our Corporate Gift Acceptance Policy (available on our website), our Board and leadership completed a thorough review and formalized an agreement that ensures this investment supports our work without influencing our advocacy, policy, or program decisions. The funds are fully unrestricted, meaning they go directly to where the River needs them most, at our sole discretion. The $1 million commitment will be distributed over three years: $500,000 in 2025, $250,000 in 2026, and $250,000 in 2027, including $250,000 dedicated to our capital campaign and $750,000 towards our programs and pillars.

As the region continues to grow, we know that development must honor and protect our river, streams, wetlands, forests, wildlife habitat, historic and cultural resources, and the communities that call this watershed home. This investment strengthens our ability to make sure that happens.

This moment marks a new chapter for FOR, and we’re excited for what we’ll achieve together.
