Thank you to our veterans for preserving the freedoms we enjoy across America. We appreciate your sacrifices today and every day. We sponsored and participated in the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce Veterans Day Parade, which was a special one this year. Now celebrated for 100 years consecutively, it is the oldest Veterans Day parade in America and the official Veterans Day Parade of North Carolina! You can read more about it here: https://www.villarifood.com/blog/veterans-day-2020/

Carmen Thomas was presented with 100 year old penny from a veteran she met during the Veterans Parade in 2019. She made an impression on him when she met him and he has stayed in touch with her through the year waiting for that day to give her this penny. Carmen was Little Miss North Carolina Princess of America.

GEN. DAN MCNEILL IS GRAND MARSHAL OF 100TH WARSAW VETERANS DAY PARADE

WARSAW — Due to misinformation, we incorrectly reported the grand marshal of Saturday's 100th Veterans Day Parade and Celebration in Warsaw in this week's issue of the Duplin Times.

Gen. Dan McNeill, a Warsaw native, will be the Grand Marshal of the parade. McNeill is best known as the commander of Coalition Forces in Afghanistan from 2002-2003 and as the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) from 2004-2007. He then served as the commander of the International Security Assistance Force from Feb. 1, 2007 through June 3, 2008. He also served as commander of the elite 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg.

Julian Davis Smith, who's featured on the front page of this week's paper, will be one of the veterans honored at the parade as well. He is a "Hard Corps Warrior," having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Other notable local veterans who will be honored Saturday are:

• Karen Brewer, U.S. Army (retired), who spent 22 years as an active duty officer and was a White House aid during the George W. Bush Administration.

• Daniel Orr, National Guard Reserve and active duty U.S. Marine Corps, served in Desert Storm, Desert Shield and Iraq.

• Ralph Smith, U.S. Army (retired), the most decorated veteran in Duplin County.

• David R. Benton, U.S. Air Force colonel (retired), also a past commander of the VFW Post 9810.

• Henry L. Stevens, IV, U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and National Guard (retired).

• Charles M. Ingram, U.S. Navy captain (retired), served as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) and also in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

The 100th annual Veterans Day Celebration will be this Saturday, Nov. 7, in downtown Warsaw. Festivities begin at 7 a.m. with the annual pancake breakfast at Warsaw Baptist Church, hosted by St. John’s Masonic Lodge #13. Food trucks and sidewalk vendors will line Front Street beginning at 9 a.m.

VFW Post 9810 will host its annual memorial service at Veterans Park on Railroad Street at 10 a.m.

At 10:45 a.m., the parade marshals and other honorees will be presented, followed by the N.C. Forestry Service flyover. The U.S. Special Forces Parachute Team will then fly in with an enormous American Flag. Promptly following the flyover and parachute jump, the parade will begin at around 11 a.m.

Starting off the week right by giving back! This week, we dropped off of over 10,000 lbs of protein, or more than 40,000 servings to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. Our mission is to make a difference with the food we serve, through the lives we touch, and in the world we live. We are pleased to be able to work with the Food Bank to deliver on our mission while supporting their important mission of addressing food insecurity in our communities.
