The following story is based on actual events that transpired on August 6, 2026, in Richmond County, Virginia.
While the events are inspired by a true encounter, certain details have been exaggerated for comedic effect.
The names of the law enforcement officers involved have been intentionally omitted to protect the author from good-natured grief, and excessive eye rolls.
No chickens, Virginia State Troopers, or Richmond County Sheriff's Deputies were harmed in the making of this tale—although at least one officer's dignity may have suffered minor, temporary injuries.
It was a quiet morning in Richmond County when a Virginia State Trooper and a Richmond County Sheriff's Deputy found themselves responding to the most serious call of the day:
"Suspicious chicken... standing in the middle of the bridge."
The Trooper arrived first, lights flashing, expecting anything from a stalled vehicle to a stranded pedestrian. Instead, there stood one very calm chicken, staring into the distance like it was contemplating life's biggest mysteries.
A few moments later, the Deputy pulled up.
The Trooper pointed. "Well... there it is."
The Deputy nodded. "Looks like it's trying to cross."
The Trooper folded his arms. "You know, I've heard about this my whole career. Never thought I'd actually work the case."
The Deputy cautiously approached. "Excuse me, ma'am... or sir... is there a reason you're on the bridge today?"
The chicken blinked.
The Trooper pulled out his notepad. "Uncooperative. Refuses to answer questions."
The Deputy whispered, "Maybe it's waiting for legal counsel."
After ten minutes of failed negotiations involving breadcrumbs, kind words, and one embarrassing attempt at chicken noises by the Trooper, the bird suddenly strutted across the bridge all on its own.
The Deputy sighed in relief.
"So..." the Trooper asked, "why'd it cross the bridge?"
The Deputy grinned.
"Judging by the direction it went... probably because taxes are lower on the other side."
The Trooper closed his notebook.
"Well," he said, "that's one mystery solved."
The Deputy shook his head.
"Nope."
"What's still a mystery?"
"Who's writing the incident report... because I'm definitely putting 'suspect flew the coop.'"
Subject was safely apprehended and transported to an undisclosed, secure location for its own protection and to prevent further bridge-related incidents.
