On May 4, 1987, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the week of May 3 as National Correctional Officers Week. He said that no other group of Americans works a more difficult, less‑visible job than the brave men and women who keep our jails and prisons safe. Those words still ring true today.

Today our correctional officers protect more than 1,000,000 incarcerated individuals across the nation. Every day they stand between conflict and calm, between danger and order, while also encouraging inmates to learn new skills, build healthier attitudes, and prepare for a productive life after release. It is a demanding job physically, emotionally, and mentally, but it is also a profoundly service‑oriented job.

Why this matters to Benton County

Here in Benton County, you-our detention officers, transport officers, cooks, nurses, administrators, and every staff member who walks the halls of the Benton County Detention Center, embody that noble calling. Your dedication has made our facility one of the cleanest, safest, and healthiest detention centers in Missouri. That reputation is not a coincidence; it is the result of countless hours of vigilance, compassion, and professionalism.
