Press release: WARTBURG CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL. We apologize for the late hour and late notice. We know everyone is concerned regarding the online threats made to students at Central Middle School. Detectives with the sheriffs office and the Tennessee Homeland Security office have worked diligently since learning of this threat early this evening and have been able to determine these threats were a hoax. The juvenile who made the threats is now in custody with charges pending. We are confident that the students and staff are safe. Due to the circumstances, Sheriff Hamby has decided to put extra deputies at the school tomorrow.

News Release: At approximately 8:00pm on 8/27/26 Morgan County E911 received a call of a bomb threat and possible hostage situation at multiple locations including Wartburg Central High. After a diligent search officers on scene determine that all locations were secure and safe. Sheriff’s Detectives worked with Morgan County Correctional Complex Investigators and Warden Shawn Phillips and were able to determine that the original call was a hoax coming from inside the prison and was made by an inmate. As of today a suspect has been identified and multiple charges are pending. We would like to thank everyone who helped resolve this situation safely and quickly, especially The Knox Co Sheriffs Office K-9 unit, Wartburg Police and Tennessee Homeland Security Office.

Update: The Wartburg Central High School property has been cleared and all is safe. It has been determined that the original call came from within the Morgan County Correctional Complex. The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with Warden Sean Phillips and his staff to determine the exact source of the call however, because of the high numbers of inmates possibly involved it will likely be sometime tomorrow before an exact location can be determined. As of right now, all school properties are determined to be safe and there is no reason for the public to be concerned.

As drivers, it’s important to know that children’s eyesight is still developing, and that they are more likely to act impulsively. If you see a child walking near the road or in a parking lot, don’t assume they can see you right away. Be aware of your surroundings and always be ready to brake for someone’s safety!

Thank you Morgan County Citizens for coming out and showing your support for your candidates, win or lose. I am very proud of all of the candidates. Running for public office isn’t easy. I am truly humbled to be your Sheriff for the next four years. Thank you for your vote of confidence and support for the Morgan County sheriffs department.

Sheriff Rick Hamby and his staff express their condolences to the Garrett family for the loss of Woody Garrett. Thank you to all the Emergency Personnel and community volunteers who helped in the search. We would also like to say a special thank you to Doug Garrett and family who helped in locating their family member. Thank you to EMA Director Ethan Webb, Neil Noe and Rescue Squad members for their continued dedication in serving this community. Lastly to Tennessee Highway Patrol for the resources provided and help given in this endeavor.

As always Morgan County came together when it needed it the most. In troubled times we must lean on our friends and neighbors, and I am most grateful that they are always there to help.
