What a Memorial Day!

Yesterday was one for the books, and we wanted to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who helped make Wasco’s Memorial Day celebration such a success.

We started the day honoring those who served with the Memorial Service, prayer, and Taps, then spent the rest of the day celebrating community together.

A huge thank you to the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers for making their first appearance in Wasco and bringing an immense amount of energy to the parade and performances throughout the day. We have had people stopping by City Hall all day, sharing how much they enjoyed the event and how excited they were to see the drummers. We hope you enjoyed visiting our community as much as we enjoyed having you.

Thank you as well to Joe Burgess for opening the day with prayer, and to Joe Dabulskis for announcing parade participants and helping keep the event moving throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone who entered vehicles in the car show, donated baked goods to the pastry auction, purchased raffle tickets, volunteered, participated in the parade, supported vendors, and came out to spend the day with us.

Special recognition also goes to the people who helped make the day happen behind the scenes: Brittany Dark and the Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce, including helping connect us with the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers; Jessica Richelderfer Wheeler and Ian Melzer for coordinating and supporting operations through the Wasco School Events Center; City Mayor Beth McCurdy; and Eric Akin for their leadership and support throughout the event.

Congratulations to all of our car show, pastry auction, and raffle winners, and an extra congratulations to Ian Melzer for taking home the raffle grand prize.

Events like this happen because people volunteer, plan, donate, organize, participate, and show up.

Thank you for helping make Memorial Day in Wasco such a remarkable day. We look forward to doing it again next year.

During a power outage, remember to turn off irrigation. Wasco has no generators for the wells. Thank you

Thank you to everyone who attended the May 19th City Council meeting!

Council approved the City's budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2026-2027, which is the spending plan that helps guide City projects, services, maintenance, and operations over the next year. Thank you to the Budget Committee and everyone who participated in the process.

A few other updates from the evening:
- Community Cat Care shared updates on fundraising and efforts to support local spay/neuter services.
- We heard from Environment Oregon about a statewide idea to support Oregon State Parks through optional vehicle registration participation and talked about the role parks and recreation play in rural communities.
- Staff shared updates on current projects, maintenance work around town, Memorial Day preparations, and progress related to the PCL solar expansion.

Thank you as well to everyone helping prepare for Memorial Day weekend, including Wasco School, Jessica Richelderfer Wheeler, Tyler Henricksen, Lumpy Magargel, and all of our other volunteers. Community events take a lot of work behind the scenes, and we appreciate everyone helping make them happen.

Memorial Day is Wasco's largest annual event, and currently our only annual event held primarily outdoors, and there are still plenty of ways to get involved!

We are still looking for:
- Volunteers
- Baked goods for the pastry auction
- Vendors for the artisan market
- Parade participants (including veterans for the veteran float!)
- And, of course, attendees!

Whether you'd like to lend a hand, donate a favorite recipe, join the parade, set up a booth, help set up chairs, or simply come spend the day with us, we'd love to see you there on Monday.

The Memorial Service begins at 9 AM, to include Taps and a community prayer led by Pastor Joe Burgess. Veterans are invited to join us beforehand at the Wasco School Events Center for a complimentary breakfast before the day's events begin.

As always, City Council meetings are open to the public, and you're welcome to stop in and see what's happening at City Hall. The next meeting is scheduled at 6:30 PM on June 16.

This pumpkin has been sitting in City Hall since Halloween… and somehow it’s still going strong.

No mold. No collapse. Just quietly existing.

At this point, we’re impressed, and a little concerned.

So we’re taking bets:

👉 How much longer do you think it lasts?

Drop your guesses below.
Closest guess wins bragging rights (and maybe we’ll finally retire it 😄)

"Flushable wipes" are not flushable. There was major sewer clog today. Always throw away wet wipes in the trash can.

Did your water bill just go up again?

Nope - not this time.

At this week’s City Council meeting, held on Tuesday, April 21st at 6:30 pm, the only water rate change approved was for bulk water load-out (basically large-scale water use like construction and agriculture). It does NOT affect regular residential rates, which were updated back in December. This rate change doesn't even affect our farmers!

Other things discussed included sewer system upgrades, infrastructure planning, and a potential project that could bring in additional revenue for the City.

Why this matters:
Decisions made in these meetings affect your bills, services, and how the City plans for the future; even if the meetings themselves aren’t exactly exciting.

If you’re ever curious, you’re always welcome to sit in on a meeting. But if not, we’ll keep sharing quick summaries so you can stay informed either way.
