The Waseca Fire Department celebrated our 2024 recruits completing training and probation tonight. They were given badges and black helmets. Many hours of training goes into being ready to respond to all types of calls. We were joined by firefighters and their families. Congratulations on a job well done! Pictured from left to right. On Thursday, April 16th at 6:59 PM, Waseca Fire was paged to an out of control grass fire NorthEast of Waseca off the Snake Trail. The area is East of Rice Lake in the Findlay Wildlife Management Area. Initial arriving units determined the fire had spread to a large area and more assistance was requested from other departments in the region.

Departments used brush trucks, ATVs and tankers from multiple departments to control the fire. Crews were challenged heavily by wet conditions underneath the burning dry grass in the swampy area. Numerous fire vehicles became stuck in mud throughout the firefighting efforts. About 10 PM, The MN DNR arrived with their MarshMaster to reach the areas that other equipment could not.

No structures were damaged. No injuries are reported. The cause of the fire will be investigated by the Waseca County Sheriffs Office and the DNR.

Most crews were released by about 11:30 PM.

Waseca Fire was assisted by the following fire departments: Faribault, Elysian, Kilkenny, Waterville, Owatonna, Janesville, New Richland, Ellendale, Morristown, and Medford. Also assisting was the MN DNR and North Memorial Health Ambulance along with personnel from the Waseca Police Department, Waseca County Sheriffs Office, Waseca County 911 dispatchers, Waseca Fire Auxiliary, and the State Fire Marshals Office.

The timeline for any more information to be released is not yet determined.

As always, we thank the Waseca community and all assisting agencies with your ongoing support!
