Did you know Minnesota offers dental benefits for eligible veterans and surviving spouses?

Many people are surprised to learn that the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) may help cover routine dental care, dentures, and even extractions for qualifying veterans and dependents.

Here’s what may be available through this state benefit program:

🦷 Up to $1,500 annually for routine dental care
🦷 Additional denture authorization up to $4,000
🦷 Up to $2,500 for extractions related to denture preparation

These benefits are income- and asset-based, and eligibility must be approved through MDVA.

Dental health is important to your overall health, confidence, and quality of life—and too many veterans and surviving spouses go without care simply because they don’t realize help may be available.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, stop in and see us. We can help explain the program, review eligibility requirements, and assist with the application process.

Many veterans live with conditions that may be connected to their military service—but aren’t always sure what “service connected” really means.

A service-connected disability is more than just having a diagnosis. In most cases, there must be:
✅ A current diagnosed condition
✅ An in-service event, injury, illness, or exposure
✅ A connection between the two

That connection can involve physical conditions, mental health concerns, toxic exposures, hearing loss, joint pain, PTSD, and many other issues tied to military service.

It’s also important to know what service connection is not:
❌ It is not automatic
❌ It is not based only on time served
❌ It is not limited to combat injuries
❌ And it does not mean you have to figure it all out alone

Every veteran’s story is different, and many claims are stronger than veterans realize once their records, medical evidence, and service history are properly reviewed.

If you have questions about your condition, benefits, or whether something may be service connected, talk with your local Governmental Veteran Service Officer (GVSO). We are here to help guide you through the process, explain your options, and advocate for the benefits you may have earned.

It’s called CHAMPVA—and many eligible spouses and dependents don’t even realize they qualify.

💡 CHAMPVA provides:

👨‍👩‍👧 You may qualify if you are:

The spouse or child of a Veteran rated permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition

If that sounds like your situation—or you’re just not sure—don’t try to figure it out alone.

Veterans—have you looked into VA Health Care lately?

Many veterans are surprised to learn just how affordable it is:

✅ No annual Premiums

That means you can access quality care without the financial stress that often comes with private insurance.

Whether you’re dealing with ongoing health concerns or just want peace of mind, enrolling in VA Health Care ensures you have coverage when you need it most.

💬 Even if you have other insurance, VA health care can be a valuable secondary option.

This year marks 10 years serving as the Director of Veteran Services for Waseca County.
I’ve spent some time reflecting on what that truly means—and honestly, it’s hard to put into words.
Over the past decade, I’ve had the honor of standing beside some of the most incredible people I’ve ever met. The veterans and families in this community have trusted me with their stories, their struggles, and their victories. That’s something I will never take lightly.
This has never just been a job to me—it’s been a calling.
I’ve had the opportunity to advocate for our veterans here at home, across the state, and even at the national level. But what has meant the most are the relationships built along the way.
I also want to take a moment to remember the veterans we’ve lost over these past 10 years. We honor your service, your sacrifice, and the legacy you leave behind. You are not forgotten.
And to my family—thank you. This work can be heavy at times, and there are days it follows me home. Your support, patience, and love have helped me weather the stress and stay focused on what matters most. I couldn’t have done this without you.
It has truly been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve this community.
Here’s to continuing the mission

This month I had the honor of representing the veterans of Waseca County in Washington DC at the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference. I was given the opportunity to place a wreath at one of the most sacred places in our nation, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, at Arlington National Cemetery, alongside Chairman of the Military and Veterans Committee Sid Conklin and NACo First Vice President George Dunlap.

Standing at the Tomb is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served and never came home, and by the families who carry that loss every day. It is a place that represents every service member whose story was never fully told, but whose sacrifice will never be forgotten.

As your Waseca County Veterans Service Officer and a national advocate for veterans, I carried this moment with deep humility and gratitude. I was thinking about the veterans and families here at home who entrusted me to speak on their behalf and fight for the benefits and recognition they have earned.

This honor was not mine alone—it belonged to the veterans of Waseca County.

Thank you for allowing me to represent you

NACVSO President Andrew Tangen was featured in a months-long investigative piece into claim sharks.

“To claim veterans need choice by doing something that violates federal law and targeting veterans who are in desperate need of support is not choice, it’s exploitation.”
