Two-thirds of radio-collared wolves that lived their entire lives in Yellowstone were eventually killed by other wolves. After watching 121 of these territorial fights over 16 years, a researcher discovered that the most valuable wolf in the pack during a clash was not the biggest or the fastest. It was the oldest. A pack with one more old wolf than its opponent had 150 percent greater odds of winning, a bigger advantage than simply having an extra wolf of any age. The old wolf that could no longer keep up with the elk was the wolf that won the war.
Kira Cassidy studied interpack aggression in Yellowstone wolves for her thesis at the University of Minnesota under L. David Mech and continued the work with Douglas Smith, Daniel MacNulty, Daniel Stahler, and Matthew Metz through the Yellowstone Wolf Project. Between 1995 and 2010, the research team documented every interpack encounter they observed from aircraft and ground positions. Some were chases that ended when one pack retreated. Some were fights that ended with a dead wolf. In every case, the team recorded pack sizes, compositions, the ages and sexes of the wolves involved, and the outcome.
A pack of six encountering a pack of five had 2.4 to 1 odds of winning. Numbers are the first currency of wolf warfare. But numbers were not the whole story. When Cassidy controlled for pack size and examined what else predicted the winner, two factors emerged above everything else: the number of adult males and the number of old wolves, defined as six years or older.
A wolf older than six is past its physical prime. Its hunting speed has declined. MacNulty's own research on Yellowstone wolves showed that individual hunting performance peaks around age three and deteriorates afterward. An old wolf participates less in dangerous elk hunts. It falls behind during long chases. It avoids the kicks that a younger wolf absorbs. By the conventional measure of what a wolf is supposed to do, the old wolf is in decline.
During a territorial fight, the old wolf is not in decline. It is the most important animal present. Cassidy described her own surprise directly: I really thought that prime-aged animals would be best. If any age mattered at all it would be the big fighters that are strong. But the old wolves have years and years of experience.
Experience in this context means something specific. An old wolf has encountered rival packs before. It has seen pack mates killed. It has likely participated in killing a rival. It has survived situations that younger wolves have not yet faced. It may recognize the difference between a fight worth engaging and a fight worth avoiding, a distinction that a three-year-old in peak physical condition has not yet learned. The old wolf's value is not in its body. It is in its judgment.
Cassidy used the Druid Peak pack as an example. The Druids ran into the Slough Creek pack and won despite being outnumbered. The Druids had one more old adult than the Sloughs. That single experienced wolf tipped the outcome more than the numerical disadvantage should have allowed. One old wolf outweighed the math.
