AFOP's Children in the Fields Campaign strives to improve the quality of life of migrant and seasonal farmworker children by advocating for enhanced educational opportunities and the elimination of discriminatory federal child labor laws in agriculture. Since 1997, AFOP’s Children in the Fields Campaign has been dedicated to ensuring that farmworker children are protected and given an opportunity

to succeed in life. By educating the public, advocating for educational programs for farmworker children, and supporting fair living wages for all farmworkers, the Children in the Fields Campaign strives to get farmworker children out of the fields and back into schools. The Children in the Fields Campaign has partnered with the Child Labor Coalition, the National Consumers League, and other concerned parties to protect farmworker children. Together, they work to publicize the plight of this hidden population and advocate for federal policies that would strengthen the child labor safeguards in agriculture so that they are just as protective as those in other industries. In 2009, the Children in the Fields Campaign launched a new phase to increase grassroots efforts in five key states and garner support for better protection of farmworker children under the law, providing them with equal opportunities for success. Regional Coordinators in the farmworker communities of California, North Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas have formed community coalitions and farmworker youth councils to raise awareness about the persistent issue of child labor in our agricultural system.

In the US, there is no vacating of federal-level criminal records for human trafficking victims. Among 467 surveyed victims, 62% reported being cited, arrested, or detained at least once, with 71% having a criminal record. 90% of those convictions were for crimes directly related to their trafficking.

📣📣📣Amid discoveries of 13-year-olds cleaning saws in meatpacking plants and 10-year-olds working in the kitchen at a McDonald's, the Biden administration has vowed to crack down on child labor violations in the U.S.

But largely absent from those discussions are the estimated hundreds of thousands of children who are legally working in equally hazardous conditions on farms.

🙌2023 Theme: Social Justice for All. End Child Labour!
Observed on June 12th, World Day Against Child Labour is intended to serve as a catalyst for the growing worldwide movement against child labour. Emphasizing the link between social justice and child labour, the slogan for the World Day in 2023 is ‘Social Justice for All. End Child Labour!’.

This World Day Against Child Labour, June 12, 2023 we are calling for

👉Reinvigorated international action to achieve social justice, particularly under the envisaged Global Coalition for Social Justice, with child labour elimination as one of its important elements;
👉Universal ratification of ILO Convention No. 138 on Minimum Age, which, together with the universal ratification of ILO Convention No. 182 on Worst Forms of Child Labour achieved in 2020, would provide all children with legal protection against all forms of child labour.

Starting in 2007, we have been running the Migrant & Seasonal Farmworker Children Art & Essay Contests. This contest seeks the original words and artwork submitted by farmworker children from across the United States. Prizes include scholarships and an all-expenses-paid trip to AFOP’s national conference in the fall. For details on how to apply, please see our website, afop.org/cif.
