For #AmeriCorpsWeek, we are putting the spotlight on Tennessee national service members. Meet Joelle Thompson, an AmeriCorps member with BRIDGES, USA in Memphis and hear what inspired her to serve.
“I chose to serve with AmeriCorps because I wanted to have a gap year of work experience that was meaningful and impactful for communities that deserve it most. I was a Bridge Builder growing up, and that experience reminded me of the opportunities I would have to accomplish my goals for doing meaningful and impactful work. At BRIDGES, serving youth has expanded my knowledge on the issues youth face, their passions and interests, and how to propel them into community building. AmeriCorps has allowed me to tailor my interests to my work, do a significant amount of internal work and learn how I show up in my community through service.
As a native Memphian, and a future Public Health professional, I have a fiery passion for health equity, social justice, and community development in all areas of disenfranchised communities. Memphis, being a majority black city, has given me the tools and the inspiration for giving back and serving, and I believe youth development is the best way to attack the cycles of disparities and issues that plague our minority communities. As an advocate, I have been able to build youth leaders through my service term and develop my own advocacy skills that I do not believe would have happened anywhere else. I am forever grateful for my AmeriCorps and BRIDGES experience this year, especially through the troubling times of today.”

It is #AmeriCorpsWeek and we are putting the spotlight on Tennessee national service members. Dylan Green, an Appalachian Regional Coalition on Homelessness AmeriCorps member, shared what he has experienced and gained while serving with Chattanooga Homeless Coalition.
“Being an advocate for the community and folks experiencing homelessness that don't have anyone to speak for them, has been my favorite part of my AmeriCorps experience. Just being able to be there for people that have no one else, especially during the challenges they faced this past year due to the pandemic, has been so meaningful. Also having the opportunity to use news media and social media to reach new people has been a fantastic experience. I had never done that before, and I saw the results of it through new donations and hearing from new people that wanted to get involved in what we are doing. For the recent Point in Time Count event, I enjoyed the experience of learning how to organize volunteers. I have gained some planning and leadership skills and received many valuable trainings while serving. For example, I received Narcan training, and I carry lifesaving kits with me during outreach. There have been a few times that I thought I was going to need to use it, and it is good to know that, if needed, I can save a life due to my training. I also trained on human trafficking and learned that I had a limited understanding of what human trafficking is and now have new resources to share. I have also gained skills in case management. Basically, I was given the freedom to explore a lot of different roles and responsibilities that I never thought before I would be able to do. I love my service experience”

Chelsea Blumenthal was motivated to join AmeriCorps Reading Partners in San Francisco because Chelsea believes educational equity should be a basic right, not a privilege. As a Site Coordinator, she was able to interact with students in a way that catalyzed the course of their educational experience. Knowing that by fourth grade, students who are not reading at grade level are four times less likely to graduate on time, she was motivated every day to push her students to get them ready for graduation and life beyond. Greetings fellow alums! Hope all are well. I am currently searching for a job in Urban/Regional Planning as close to finishing with a Master's and prefer the public sector while open to private as well. Was wondering of any leads or opportunities anybody could suggest? Thank you all so much as I appreciate this platform for networking and helping one another.
Hi AmeriCorps Alums. If you are looking to further your graduate education, the MA iin Cross-Cultural and International Education (Macie Bgsu) program might be the right program for you. We attract former volunteers from AmeriCorps and Peac Corps and others who understand the importance of service to our communities. We are still accepting applications for fall if you are interested. Dear AmeriCrops Alums, My name is Jeremy Surla Vargas and I am an AmeiCorps Alum. I have served three terms in City Year in Los Angeles, National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) in Denver and Community HealthCorps in Bangor, Maine. I am writing to let you know that my current employer, the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center is looking for a dynamic, detail-oriented, full-time Director of Development. Please share this opening with your networks and if you have a person who you think would be a particularly good fit, please let me know. We are looking for someone to work with our President, Board of Directors, and development team to bring in major new gifts while stewarding current donors. We are also looking for someone who is passionate about MassBudget’s mission of advancing equitable policy solutions that create an inclusive, thriving Commonwealth for all. This is an exciting time at MassBudget as we continue our journey toward being an antiracist organization and explore what that means for our research, advocacy, communications, partnerships and our development work. In the last several years, under the leadership of our President Marie-Frances Rivera, MassBudget is paying particular attention to reversing historic, harmful policies that have created disparate outcomes for people of color in our state, outcomes that have been highlighted during the pandemic and resulting economic downturn. We work closely with grassroots partners, broad-based coalitions, legislators and issue-based advocacy groups. Our Development Director will help us to bring in the funding we need to have a real impact in driving equitable policy change in the Commonwealth. I have attached the job description. You can also find it on our website here: https://massbudget.org/2021/04/07/job-announcement-director-of-development/ Thank you for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.
Dear Americorps, I am an alumni of NCCC, Charleston Class 7, team Red 9. I am writing to share the sad news that our teammate, Jennie Munoz, passed away on Wednesday. I am writing to let Americorps members know about this. Jennie was an amazing person and made Americorps a better place. I will attach a link below to a gofundme page to help with the costs of her funeral and an obituary. Jennie wasn't just a great Americorps teammate, she was my friend. She was a great person and she will be missed. Sincerely, Brian Lavid NCCC Charleston, Class 7, Red 9 https://gofund.me/7229f1fa On Wednesday, March 31, 2021, Jennie Munoz, loving daughter, sister, and friend passed away at 43. She was born on January 18, 1978 in Stockton, California to María Socorro Vargas and Juan Munoz-Botello. With hard work and dedication, she went on to achieve a Bachelors and Masters in Social Work pursuing her lifelong passion for championing human rights around the world. Jennie's determination to serve on the front lines of foreign policy even took her overseas on tours in Venezuela and Sudan. She was generous and a fighter for those in need. The list of strengths she embodied are too numerous to list but top among them; her love of family, her faith, her resilience, adventurous spirit, zest for life, internal nobility, and authenticity are a banner to follow. Jennie is survived by her mother, her father, her siblings, family, and friends. The celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 10th, 2021 at St. Joseph on Capitol Hill.
