Today, we’re looking back at one of the standout moments of the summer, our 2026 FYI congressional briefing. On June 25, Members of Congress, congressional staff, and child welfare stakeholders gathered on Capitol Hill to hear directly from our Foster Youth Interns. With more than 100 attendees, the room reached standing-room-only capacity, a powerful reminder of just how much people want to hear from those with lived experience.

Congressional Coalition on Adoption Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Danny K. Davis (IL-07) delivered closing remarks, commending the interns for their leadership, lived expertise, and the policy recommendations they brought forward to help strengthen outcomes for children and youth in foster care.

This week’s FYI flashback is all about access because that’s really at the heart of the Foster Youth Internship Program® experience. Each year, FYIs spend their summer interning in a congressional office, working alongside staff and getting a firsthand look at how policy gets made. But their access to policymakers doesn’t stop there. Throughout the summer, the 2026 cohort participated in coffee chats, briefings, and receptions that put them face-to-face with decision-makers, including coffee chats with Adoption Caucus Co-Chair Sen. Kevin Cramer (ND) and Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02). Lastly, they capped off the summer with a Hill Day, where FYIs sat down with their own Members of Congress and their staff to share their stories and policy recommendations on how to improve the federal child welfare system. A big thank you to all of this year’s congressional offices who hosted a 2026 Foster Youth Intern, including Adoption Caucus Co-Chairs Rep. Robert Aderholt (AL-04) and Rep. Danny K. Davis (IL-07).

We just wrapped up an incredible summer with our 2026 Foster Youth Internship Program® (FYI) cohort — and while they’ve since headed home, we’re not ready to say goodbye to this journey just yet.

For the next few Fridays, we will be taking a look back at their time in DC, starting with where it all began: their very first week in the city. That first week was a whirlwind — professional headshots, a series of workshops, a Smithsonian scavenger hunt, and a water taxi cruise to Old Town Alexandria for a day-long retreat.
