Are you considering Retiring/Separating from the Military?

TAP is broken down into 4 parts over a minimum 12-month timeline, although those getting ready to retire are strongly encouraged to start as far as 24 months out. Many participants share that they wished they had started their process sooner than they actually did because the entire program is certainly is a wealth of information.

TAP STEPS:

Initial Counseling (STEP 1)

Individualized Initial Counseling (IC) between the service member and a TAP counselor is the official start to the transition process. It is required no less than 365 days prior to the service member's official separation date. During the IC session, service members complete their personal self-assessment and begin the development of their Individual Transition Plan (ITP) to identify their unique needs of the transition process and post-transition goals.

Complete and MUST Send back to register:

- JBAB MFRC - Customer Info and SOU
- DoD Self-Assessment Worksheet

Pre-Separation Briefing (STEP 2):

Like the initial counseling, the pre-separation briefing is also due no less than a year before service members plan to officially leave the military. This is a workshop packed with information about available benefits and transition help so our transitioning members know their available resources.

TAP Workshop (STEP 3):

This workshop consists of MFRC, VA, and Department of Labor. The MFRC discusses how transitioning service members shift their lives from being centered on the military to being focused on the civilian world. This day focuses on resilience building, learning how to manage their own transition, translating their military occupational specialty into a civilian career, and the impact on their taxable income and creating a financial plan for post-transition. The Department of Veterans Affairs will have a day full of knowledge of resources and the last day is a 1-day workshop which provides an introduction to the essential tools and resources needed to evaluate career options, gain information for civilian employment, and understand the fundamentals of the employment process.

TAP Capstone Requirements (STEP 4):

After the TAP courses and briefing days, a final TAP capstone appointment with the transition counselor will certify that they have checked all of the transition boxes and met the list of career readiness standards (CRS). The capstone is the final piece of the TAP process and, in most cases, must be completed no less than 90 days before their final out date.

Capstones are held every Thursday between 0900-1430. Have the following documents available:

- E-Benefits Account Registration Established
- MilConnect DS Logon Created~ eForm Signed
- CCAF Unofficial Transcripts Printed (Air Force Only)
- VMET Printed
- Individual Transition Plan
- Resume
- 12 Month Budget
- Gap Analysis Worksheet
- Interest Profiler Assessment (mynextmove.org)

On Saturday, 17 September 2022, we had the honor and privilege to support one of our Gold Star Families during the Fallen Warrior Ceremony at JB Andrews’ Air & Space Expo. The daughter and grandson of Capt Morris Thompson, an MIA from the Korean War, were presented with a signed photo as well as a coin from the USAF Thunderbirds. In addition, Saturday’s performance was dedicated to Capt Thompson and his family. As we approach Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day on 25 September, please take a moment to honor the sacrifices made by our Gold Star Families and their fallen service members.
Registration is open until 20 September.
