WomenHeart is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1999 by three heart attack survivors who transformed the isolation, confusion and ignorance they experienced about women’s heart disease into a mission to save women’s lives. The organization has grown into a coalition and community of more than 27,000 members nationwide, including heart patients and their families, physicians, health advo

cates, and consumers committed to helping women live longer, healthier lives. These survivors attend the organization’s Leadership Symposium, held at the Mayo Clinic, to obtain leadership and advocacy training. They go on to volunteer as WomenHeart support group leaders, community educators, and media spokeswomen around the U.S. WomenHeart empowers women living with heart disease to manage their own heart health and to spread that message to others. The organization also educates policymakers, health professionals and the public about the urgent need to make women’s heart health a priority.

There are still significant gaps in how women’s heart health is studied, understood, and treated.

Closing those gaps requires bringing different perspectives into the same space and being willing to challenge existing assumptions.

That is the work the Heart Health IS Women’s Health Summit is designed to do.

WomenHeart Champion Michelle Fleury is using her voice to create meaningful impact, from national platforms to personal moments of connection.

At the American Heart Association’s Chicago Circle of Red Signing Day, Michelle shared her experience as a two-time SCAD survivor with an audience of donors and community leaders.

She also marked her one-year “rebirthday” by returning to Rush Oak Park Hospital to thank care teams, share WomenHeart resources, and spark new connections with clinical partners.

👏 Thank you, Michelle, for turning your story into action and advancing women’s heart health in powerful ways.

A simple question can change a medical conversation.

“What does this mean for me long-term?”

That question helps shift the focus from immediate response to future impact.

WomenHeart helps women build the confidence to ask these questions and advocate for their care.
