15 JUNE 2014
Start of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE [ISIL – Iraq/Syria]
Operation Inherent Resolve [OIR] began on 15 June 2014 as the United States responded to the rapid advance of the terrorist organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Earlier that month, ISIS captured several major cities in Iraq, to include Tikrit, the hometown of Saddam Hussein, and Iraq second largest city, Mosul, threatening the stability of the Iraqi government and the security of the region. In response, U.S. military personnel were deployed to assess the situation, protect American interests, and support Iraqi security forces.
Operation Inherent Resolve evolved into a multinational campaign involving more than 80 partner nations and organizations dedicated to defeating ISIS in Iraq and Syria. This operation combined airstrikes, intelligence sharing, training, advising, and assistance to local forces. U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, and coalition personnel worked together to help Iraqi and Syrian partner forces reclaim territory occupied by ISIS. Over time, the campaign significantly degraded ISIS’s military capabilities, destroyed key leadership networks, and contributed to the liberation of millions of people from terrorist control.
