Fighting anti-Semitism is at the core of what we do. Building on nearly 177 years of work fighting anti-Semitism in all its forms, we have now launched None Shall Be Afraid, our signature response to the world’s oldest hatred.

Inspired by President George Washington’s Letter to the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island, which in turn quotes Micah 4:4, this initiative resolves that “Everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree and there shall be none to make him afraid.”

The initiative’s name is inspired by a quote from a letter President George Washington wrote to the congregants of Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island expressing his vision of religious tolerance in America: “Everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree and there shall be none to make him afraid.”

The event was a great success raising funds for our Disaster Relief efforts in support of IsraAID’s global humanitarian relief assistance. A special thank you to guest speaker, IsraAID fellow Ari Berman, who briefed the attendees on the vital work the organization carries out in over 50 countries aiding vulnerable, disaster affected communities.

Over the weekend of Jan. 24-26, 2020 B'nai B'rith Connect leaders from around the country gathered in South Florida for their second annual Retreat. Starting off with a Diplomatic Encounter Mexican-themed Shabbat dinner with the Consul General of Mexico, Jonathan Auerbach, followed by a full day of meetings discussing leadership development, programming and the future. They also enjoyed boat rides, a night out on the town and beach brunches.

Mariaschin (center), pictured at the residence of the Consul General of Japan in New York, Kanji Yamanouchi, at a reception to honor Takanobu Fuchikami, mayor of the Japanese city of Tsuruga. A port city, Tsuruga welcomed Jewish refugees during World War II thanks to the life-saving work of then-Japanese Consul Chiune Sugihara.

All of these representatives are alumni of the Kakehashi mission, which seeks to build bridges between the Japanese and American Jewish communities through travel to Japan.

B'nai B'rith Young Leadership Retreat

Over the weekend of Feb. 1 – Feb. 3, B’nai B’rith Young Leadership Chair and Senior Vice President Scott Knapp brought the next generation of B’nai B’rith leaders to Fort Lauderdale to unite and build for the future. Scott coordinated an amazing young leadership retreat; from Shabbat with a sommelier, to guest speakers, a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, strengths) analysis, planning for the future, and enjoying the evenings together, participants were kept busy. But the activity became even more fulfilling when they stopped to serve breakfast to seniors at the B’nai B’rith’s Deerfield Beach affordable housing complex. After all of that, they celebrated with some R&R on the beach and a rooftop Super Bowl watch party.
