Peace X Peace has partnered with the Center for Peacebuilding and Development to sponsor screenings of film and
conversations with fathers whose daughters were killed
by su***de bomber and Israeli military. Screenings of Within the Eye of the Storm, a new documentary on the parallel stories and personal experiences of Rami Elhanan, Israeli, and Bassam Aramin, Palestinian, will be held in the DC area February 21 to February 26. Both men will be present at the screenings to tell the story of their unlikely friendship after the deaths of their young daughters, one killed by a su***de bomber and the other by an Israeli solider. The course will involve gaining knowledge about monitoring and evaluation theory and tools as applied in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, an introduction to practice with various evaluation tools e.g., logframes and indicators, an introduction to managing an evaluation in the field, an examination of various methodologies, and an examination of case studies. PDI is pleased to offer a new course, Gender, Women's Leadership and Peacebuilding, taught by Professor Catalina Rojas. This course will be run from May 20th through the 24th and can be taken for two credits. This course will involve a look at the gendered dynamics of peacebuilding processes and an examination of roles of women in war and peace, from perpetrator, to victim, to agents of change, among other things. Professor Rojas has expertise in a wide variety of skills including advocacy, applied research, training and program management. She has over fifteen years of experience working on advocacy issues with civil society organizations in Latin America in the areas of peace initiatives and women’s rights. . PDI is pleased to offer the course Media and Peacebuilding: Mediate the Conflict to be taught by Professor Ross Howard. This course will take place May 17th through the 19th and can be taken for one credit. The course will involve an introduction to the concept of media development for peacebuilding and examination of field-experience in conflict stressed environments, including the role the media played in the Arab Spring, among other things. Professor Howard is an award-winning professional journalist, a journalism faculty member at Langara College, Vancouver and chair of the international journalism training consortium Media & Democracy Group. He has authored several books and given numerous presentation and guest lectures on media and peacebuilding and conflict sensitive journalism. He is also a leading program and curriculum developer and developed a training workshop in conflict sensitive reporting for journalists. PDI is pleased to offer the course Trauma-Sensitive Peacebuilding, Development and Humanitarian Aid to be taught by Professors Elaine Zook Barge and Vernon E. Jantzi. The course will take place May 17th through the 19th and can be taken for one credit or a reduced fee. The course will examine how greater trauma awareness affects and interfaces with peacebuilding and related activities and explore the nature of trauma and resilience in relation to these fields through conceptual presentations, interactive activities, readings, and personal reflections, among other things. Professor Elaine Zook Barge is the director of Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience at Eastern Mennonite University. Professor Vernon Jantzi is a professor emeritus of sociology at Eastern Mennonite University. PDI is pleased to offer the course Designing, Implementing and Evaluating Programs for Children in Adversity to be taught by Professor Tom Lent. This course will be taught May 13th through the 17th and can be taken for two credits or a reduced fee. The course will involve a variety of things, including drawing upon and helping build a theory of change and analyzing different analytic and programmatic tools that increase inclusion, agency, equity and the respect for child rights and well being as part of the weave of peacebuilding and development. Tom Lent is the senior program director at the Academy for Educational Development in Washington D.C. and specializes in development and human rights, specifically women’s and children’s rights. He has over 38 years of experience in his field has worked in Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. PDI is pleased to offer the course Religion, Culture and Conflict Resolution to be taught by Professor Mohammed Abu-Nimer. The course will run from May 13th to May 17th and can be taken for two credits or a reduced fee. The course will include developing an awareness of the potential for peacebuilding found within participants’ own religious and cultural and traditions and Learning the skills and approaches to deal with issues of prejudice, stereotyping, and ethnocentrism in conflict settings, among other things. Professor Mohammed Abu-Nimer is the Director of the Peacebuilding and Development Institute at American University. He is a professor in the International Peace and Conflict resolution Program and is an expert on conflict resolution and dialogues for peace. In “Crossing the Color Line,” Mr. Bond presents the civil rights movement through a history of American music, using images and bits of music. The U.S. Institute of Peace would like to invite students, faculty, and other colleagues from AU to their event Economics in Dangerous Places, a book launch at their headquarters in Washington, DC on Tuesday October 23, 2012 from 10:00am-12:30pm.
Co-authors Jurgen Brauer and J. Paul Dunne, alongside a panel of experts, will examine recent case studies and illustrate the applicability of concepts presented in their new publication “Peace Economics: A Macroeconomic Primer for Violence-Affected States.” Discussion will extend beyond economic principles into the realm of social reconstitution, social contract, and social capital in states affected by violent conflict.
