NNSA's Facility Disposition Program has cleared 3.7 million square feet across our sites, the equivalent of roughly 64 football fields, by demolishing over 250 obsolete buildings.

Through our partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management, we are also actively removing heavily contaminated facilities to eliminate worker risks and make room for modern national security infrastructure.

NNSA strengthened radiological emergency preparedness in America’s heartland through training workshops and an exercise in Topeka last month.

In partnership with the FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy, NNSA delivered workshops focused on radiation, response, and strategic communications, followed by a Community Unified Response to Radiological Incident and Emergencies (CURRIE) tabletop exercise that brought local, state, and federal partners together to strengthen coordination and readiness to keep America safe.

Protecting the homeland from radiological and nuclear threats is about more than detection. It requires expertise, policy, and real-world operational experience before those threats reach America.

That’s why a team from NNSA’s Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence went to Udaipur, India, last month for the 7th U.S.-India Radiological and Nuclear Security Dialogue. Co-hosted with India’s Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, it brought government and law enforcement experts from the United States, India, and other organizations to address smuggling challenges and prepare for incidents that can cross borders and oceans.

Participants turned the discussion ideas into action through a multi-day exercise.

These partnerships address emerging threats closer to their source, reinforcing efforts to protect the homeland and keep Americans safe.
