DYK, wasted food causes over half of the methane emissions coming from municipal solid waste landfills?! 🤯
When wasted food goes into a landfill, the food rots & produces methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times as powerful as CO2 at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Wasted food is responsible for ~58% of landfill methane emissions into the atmosphere!

Our new national strategy on reducing food waste shares how government is working together to reduce wasted food nationwide; stepping up the country’s organics recycling efforts; and boosting a circular economy !
These actions will help to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions! And when we reduce the amount of food getting thrown away into landfills, we're also saving all the time, money, and resources spent growing & transporting that food from being wasted!

Join EPA, along with U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and The White House, in making our communities healthier & cleaner through efforts. Learn more here ⬇
