www.twitter.com/myli_dc The Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI) was founded in 1979 by Mayor Marion S. Barry Jr. as a year-round program to train District of Columbia youth in the concepts of leadership and self-development.
(15)
The MYLI training model emphasizes practical, hands-on experience and a holistic approach to developing leaders for the 21st century. Each year, 250 young people participate in the year-round program and 500 youth participate in the Summer Training Program. Thousands of DC youth have received leadership training to date. Members of the Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute come from every part of the city and are racially and socio-economically diverse, representing the rich diversity of the District of Columbia. The goal of the institute is to prepare each cohort with an enriching 4-year experience that prepares them for higher education, the world of work, and to be productive and active members of their communities and of the world. Since its inception, MYLI has produced alumni successful in numerous fields, including government, business and entertainment. In 2005, At-Large Councilmember Kwame Brown, an alumus of the institute, introduced the Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute Act of 2005, making MYLI a legal and permanent fixture in the District of Columbia. Now in it's 35 year, the Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute is ready to prepare yet another generation of leaders to make our city a better place to live.
Mission: Since 1979, we've built a rich legacy of service learning, community activism, and leadership.

Was in a conversation today about the heart of MBYLI. We spoke about how the heart is gone form the program. That's not my POV I think, I actually know that the heart is still there. There are youth leaders who exemplify this everyday. They show this in many ways to me and to each other.
Yes old crew things have changed and things are not as they were when you or I was in the program.
To experience the ways in which the heart is still there create time to come out. Come out not to judge and measure "heart" but to experience heart in action.

We are about to enter an amazing period with MBYLI. We are about to begin serious summer planning for SIT 2017. We want to see all of you this year. Mentor one of our youth, come speak to our youth!! Reach out to us!!

Hello MBYLI FAMILY!! We are gearing up for summer 2016!! In preparation for the summer the staff will go through a professional development this Wednesday and Thursday. We are in need of a training space where we can play music and have privacy. We will need the space from 9 am until 5 pm. We also need facilitators for team building and other activities that will support us coming together as a year round team. Of course we can only compensate in community service hours and a letter of thanks! If you have a lead on any of these things please let me or Kemry or Norman know.

Mayor Bowser Launches Summer Programs
(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Wednesday, February 24 at 4:00 p.m., Mayor Muriel Bowser, Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity Courtney R. Snowden will host a launch event for the 2016 Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP) as the application for enrollment goes live. This week Mayor Bowser will also launch registration for the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) summer camps.
“As we continue to build pathways to the middle class for District youth, it’s important that we provide them with opportunities to learn, grow, and experience new interests,” said Mayor Bowser. “Between our summer camps and the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, we’re giving our youth and young adults in the District the platform they need to gain new skills and reach success.
MBSYEP is a locally funded initiative sponsored by the Department of Employment Services (DOES) that provides high-quality work experiences for DC residents ages 14-24 years old. The program provides subsidized placements in the private and government sectors. In 2015, Mayor Bowser expanded the program to include 22-24 year old residents and on February 2, 2016 the DC Council voted to expand the program for two more years.
