The District of Columbia Speech-Language-Hearing Association believes that Black Lives Matter! Our mission, in part, is to empower through advocacy and awareness. Given this, we can’t encourage passivity and we refuse to be silent. We are saddened by the current state of our country as we continue to watch our unarmed Black brothers and sisters lose their lives senselessly and without consequence. As an organization, we stand boldly in opposition to systemic racism, violence, and oppression. We stand in solidarity with our Black members and the Black communities we serve who are hurting and protesting due to being disenfranchised by the injustices they face.

Attention everyone! Important Message re. licensure:

Good Morning;

In response to COVID-19, DC Health has waived the licensure requirements for healthcare practitioners who hold a license in good standing in another jurisdiction, so long as that practitioner is (1) working at a licensed DC healthcare facility, or (2) is providing continuity of healthcare services to existing patients who are returning to the District.

A copy of this waiver is attached for your information along with telehealth guidance memo. This waiver also includes various requirements on facilities to allow such practice, so we encourage anyone relying on this waiver to read the document in its entirety. In addition, the telehealth guidance urges healthcare providers to practice and provide services in accordance with acceptable standards of care.

For additional information, please visit

https://coronavirus.dc.gov/

The telehealth guidance refers to patients/clients/consumers located in the District. If the patients/clients/consumers is located outside of the District, I would recommend, you check with the jurisdiction in which the patients/clients/consumers is located. In addition, you may want to check with your professional association as some are complying the requirements and guidelines for each jurisdiction.

Kind Regards,

Aisha Nixon

Strategic Planning Meeting-February 22, 2020

Come and help us make a difference in our field in the District.

DCSHA would like to start the new year off with a strategic planning with ASHA to talk about goals for the next few years and how to best achieve those.

Strategic planning attempts to identify the most significant issues that will confront the state association. It is a process whereby you prepare for the future by looking at your choices.

ASHA (AARC) is funding the development of an adolescent voice patient reported outcome measure (PROM), which will be made freely available to all clinicians for assessing the adolescent's feelings about his or her voice disorder. We are looking for clinicians who are willing to provide our contact information to their patients (and parents/guardians, as appropriate) so that they may contact us to learn more about the study. (This first phase will involve a response to a single question, and the population age range is 11 years to 21 years.) Recruitment will not begin until after IRB approval is obtained; however, as part of the IRB process, we must identify centers that will allow recruitment for this study. Please email Bonnie K. Slavych at [email protected] if you would be willing to support recruitment at your facility. We thank you so much for considering this request and hope to hear from you! (Even if you only get a patient "every now and then," you can still be a supporting facility. Please don't let that discourage you from emailing!)
