The Fishing School

The Fishing School Advancing Students. Engaging Parents. Supporting Schools. In 1990, our founder Tom Lewis, a former Metropolitan Police Department officer, opened The Fishing School in a renovated former crack house on Wylie Street, NE (Ward 6), one of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods in DC.
(1)

Seeing so much abject poverty, youth related crimes, and broken families, Mr. Lewis promised to bring about change for the youth of Washington, DC. He believed then, as we do today, that education is the absolute key to breaking the cycle of poverty, and in the power of afterschool and summer programs as vehicles for delivering learning. He also based his vision on the adage, “If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will feed himself for a lifetime.” Since 1990, TFS has helped over 4,000 students and their parents. Our programs have historically produced high impacts for children, evidenced by external evaluations, continued growth, and fiscal stability. To ensure our impact was sustained and could scale, we embarked on an ambitious strategic planning process in January 2012. This intensive, two–year process prepared us to launch our innovative new Cohort Model and a refined mission statement.

Mission: The Fishing School prepares elementary and middle school students for success in high school and life by improving their academic performance and life skills; and engaging them and their parents in intensive, multi-year, and research-based out of school time and parent engagement programs and activities.

#30FactsFor30Years

The Fishing School serves Washington, DC communities with low levels of educational attainment and high levels of poverty, unemployment, and crime. In 2018-19, only 32.4% of DC Public School students scored “proficient” on DC’s standardized math test, and 39.9% scored proficient in reading. We’re working to change this to close the achievement gap!

This week, our staff is excited to join Lights On Afterschool’s week of virtual events, which will shine a spotlight on everything afterschool programs have done this unprecedented year, as well as offer programmatic learning opportunities in science, community service, robotics, and so much more!

Launched in October 2000 by Afterschool Alliance,
Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. We’re looking forward to being a part of this year’s celebration and sending the message that every student is in need of quality educational programming. We can’t wait!

TFS continually & purposefully measures every aspect of our performance, and we actively invite appraisals of our work by a number of outside observers. Just as important as measuring our overall organizational performance, TFS also measures the performance of every student.

#30FactsFor30 Years

TFS has 7 curriculum components:

IntelliSeeds: A fun technology-based learning tool used for individualized practice and speed assessments to effectively master important academic skills.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math): Encompasses creativity, critical thinking, and technology to propel youth into promising careers, fulfilling the nation’s need for innovative and skilled leaders.

Read Alouds: Aimed at developing students’ early language skills, reinforcing reading and comprehension skills, building a higher foundation for school success, and fostering a love for learning.

Life Skills: Help build basic school success and social/emotional skills

College and Career Readiness: As early as 1st grade, we expose our youth to the college-going process, with a strong focus on Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) in order to encourage and inspire our students to think big.

Clubs: Designed to boost self-confidence, foster creativity, promote physical activity, and teach team building, our clubs are an integral component of our programming.

Homework help: Students don’t just have fun, they get things done! We offer designated time in which students can receive ongoing support in order to complete homework.

#30FactsFor30Years

Recent research indicates that over 50% of the achievement gap between students from low-income communities and those from communities with more resources is explained by the difference in access to and quality of summer learning opportunities. The Fishing School works to avoid and address this achievement gap by offering FREE intensive academic programming, life skills support, and parent engagement opportunities each summer embedded within the target communities themselves.

To support our programming, please consider making a small one time or recurring gift here: http://ow.ly/FqDA50Bi88A.

#30FactsFor30Years

Our mission is to prepare elementary and middle school youth for success in high school and life by improving their academic performance and life skills; and engaging them and their parents in intensive, multi-year, and research-based out-of-school time and parental engagement programs and activities. Our programs follow each child through critical benchmarks in their elementary school years, and continue to support through middle school to help ensure a successful transition into high school. TFS students, therefore, have a continuity of experience that may not otherwise be possible through other out-of-school time providers.
