Mold counts can skyrocket after a hurricane, causing respiratory distress for many people – even those without chronic conditions. When the National Disaster Medical System deployed in response to , we were sure to include respiratory therapists on our team so we could help patients who had been exposed to mold or other toxins. Here, NDMS Respiratory Therapist Anthony Fusco is treating a patient with no history of chronic lung conditions, but who was having trouble with congestion after the storm. After treatment, he left our medical tent with a smile on his face and prescription medication to help him stay healthy.

It takes a team of medical professionals with many different specialties willing to work in austere environments to provide support after a disaster. Does that sound like a team you want to join? We have many openings on our team for dedicated professionals who want to commit a few weeks each year to helping in disaster zones, and then return home to continue working to make their own communities heathy.
