Today is the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall! 🎉

The Wall divided East and West Berlin for 28 years. But today marks 31 years since ordinary Berliners tore it down!

In her comments on the anniversary, Ambassador Haber will remind us all that behind the history were everyday citizens of the US and Germany: "Let’s honor the sacrifices made by ordinary Americans and Germans who made that historic moment possible."

Many American service members were in Germany during this period, and many more Americans were following the events on broadcast news and TV.

Do you remember that fateful day?

The future of Democratic participation- and what we can learn from German history - Goethe-Institut USA

Webinar for students:

Join the Goethe-Institut New York on Wednesday, October 21 at 11:00 AM EDT for a webinar on "The Future of Democratic Participation - and What We Can Learn from German History." Dr. Christina Morina, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, will address the fundamental changes in modern Germany’s political-cultural landscape since the end of the Cold War. With the failed experiment of a “democratic-antifascist” socialism in the East, Germans who had grown up there faced a number of life-altering challenges – on the economic, social, cultural and political level. Focusing on the last aspect, this lecture will explore the (still) differing ideas of democracy, participation and representation in East and West Germany and weigh their potential impact on the future of liberal democracy as we know it. #ReunificationRevisited

Have you heard the story of the candy parachute that flew into space?

In 1948, one of Gail Halvorsen's candy parachutes was caught by Gert Knecht, a child of the Berlin enclave of Steinstücken. His family divided the little candy bar into four pieces; his mom folded the parachute for safe keeping.

On November 12, 1995, STS-74 space shuttle Atlantis took Gail's candy parachute for a ride: 129 orbits and docked with the Russian Space Station Mir.

The irony of it all: STS-74 docked with the Russian Mir space station. Gail's candy parachute, caught by Gert in West Berlin during the Soviet Blockade, was held, signed, and stamped by Cosmonaut Yuri Gidzenko.

Thank you for making an informed and difficult decision. It speaks to the care you show to the teachers you work with and your colleagues in Germany. I learned a German expression that I think might apply here: "Aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben."
Are there any math teachers that have gone on this trip that I could message with a few questions? :)
