As we approach World Day of the Poor, which is Sunday, we consider the words of Pope Francis: “Generosity that supports the weak, consoles the afflicted, relieves suffering and restores dignity to those stripped of it, is a condition for a fully human life." One way to give consideration to the pontiff’s words is by embracing the many in our community who are suffering from hunger and food insecurity. You can help by supporting our Virtual Food Drive: https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/vfd #WorldDayofThePoor #fightinghunger #giving #donate #FeedThePoor #washingtondc

At Catholic Charities, we understand that dental care is critical to our clients’ overall well-being, even during a pandemic. Each year we treat thousands of uninsured or low-income patients with the generosity of our volunteer providers. Though this crisis has affected how we provide care, our volunteer dentists and hygienists have made it possible to stay connected with patients. High school students. Retirees. Businesspeople. Clergy. Young Professionals. Parents. Kids. Clubs. Sports teams. Our many volunteers are as diverse as the Washington area. And it’s often that we have workplace colleagues pitch in as volunteers. That was the case today when about 35 employees and family members from Total Wine & More helped us give out food to the hungry in Montgomery County. The Total Wine group participated as part of the company’s community engagement program. It is one of the 51% of U.S. companies that support #volunteerism by their employees. Cars lined up early Saturday morning to receive grocery boxes and ready-to-eat meals, which were handed out by Catholic Charities staff and volunteers. The #volunteers included more than 35 employees and family members from Total Wine & More. #fightinghunger #Gaithersburg #COVID19response

The Child Development Center at our Kennedy School took the fun and education outside last week when it hosted a fall fest eat-out. Samples of nutritious food, including butternut squash soup, grilled veggies and vegan dessert, were available. Parents received educational information on dealing with picky eaters and preventing lead poisoning with a healthy diet, exposure prevention and periodic screening. Bags of farm-fresh produce were available, as were plant-based recipes. Partner United Planning Organization’s Quality Improvement Network provided goodie bags, as did Catholic Charities. #nutrition #education #washingtondc #childdevelopment

Last year, Catholic Charities’ professional service #volunteers donated $24.7 million in #probono assistance to the people we serve. From legal aid to dental care, these providers contributed life-changing support to our clients. So when we reopened the #medical clinic at the Spanish Catholic Center as a Volunteer Medical Clinic, we knew volunteers would step up to help. It’s a wrap at the Mona farm at our location in Temple Hills, Md. Volunteers helped urban farmers from the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources, University of Maryland finish up work from this growing season and prepare for spring. Garlic was planted, and two bell pepper beds were amended. Beds of kale, collard greens and spinach will remain over the winter for harvest next spring. Thank you to all the volunteers who planted, tended and harvested. Your work growing vegetables and herbs benefited our KitchenWork program, which prepares meals for our food programs. Catholic Charities DC has provided more than one million emergency meals and food packages to the hungry since the start of the pandemic, Julieta Machado of our Immigrant Support Services program told a city council committee hearing this morning. “Catholic Charities is working diligently to help our clients who are being severely impacted by the COVID-19 public health crisis,” she told the city’s Committee on Health. Many residents “are seeking food assistance for the very first time in their lives. We have conducted 74 distributions in the District to date, including two major giveaways at RFK Stadium and the Basilica of the National Shrine, as well as a number of distributions in Ward 8.” To read the full testimony, visit https://bit.ly/34xBxKX The Council of the District of Columbia Vincent C. Meteorologists are calling for 10 times more snow this winter than last. Granted, that might be only six inches. But winter in Washington still calls for coats, scarves and hats. Catholic Charities' Coats of Many Colors provides gently used (or new) coats to people in need. As we look ahead to winter, it's time to clean out your closet. Coats to be donated can be dropped off at two parishes in Maryland on Friday, Nov. 20. There is a particular need for XL men's and XL women's coats. #CoatsofManyColors #donation #winteriscoming #washingtondc

Renewing this powerful prayer in my recovery

October is dedicated to the holy rosary, and Catholic Charities CEO Father John Enzler writes in the Catholic Standard that this powerful prayer has a special place in his daily life. "As you know, there are four sets of mysteries – the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous mysteries. I find my meditations often lead me to what I do every day, trying my best to take care of those who are struggling and in need."

Let me begin by thanking so many of you who have reached out with prayers and good wishes as I continue my recuperation from heart surgery, which I wrote about last month. I am happy to report that...

One hundred new clients a week are contacting our Spanish Catholic Center in Northwest D.C. seeking assistance, program managers noted today in a virtual program celebrating the center and marking #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth. The center offers food assistance, medical and dental care, #ESOL classes, job training and other services. “Clients are counting on us. They are worried,” said Julieta Machado, director of immigrant support services. She noted that many are the newly unemployed, struggling with rent, food and other basic needs because of the pandemic’s economic crisis. Watch for updates on the work of the Spanish Catholic Center. Volunteers and staff with our Montgomery County Family Center in Silver Spring were busy this morning providing SHARE Food Network grocery packages to families in need. The program distributes food boxes every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. As with all our food programs, this pantry has seen extensive growth in the number of people asking for help since the pandemic battered the economy. In September alone, emergency food was provided to 963 families from the center’s food pantry. I just found out about the University of Maryland's two day dental and health festival on September 12-14, 2019. A few people of mine, would like to attend the free event, for dental and health issues. Do early registrants have to sign up with Catholic Charities first, and in person? I have a sister, who is a senior citizen just like me. She is on oxygen and her breathing machine, will last for about two hours, unless she can get herself plugged up, somewhere on the floor at the University of Maryland's Dental event. She would like extractions done on the three teeth left in her mouth. I want to have my teeth (6) cleaned, and possibly my dentures adjusted, so that I don't have to used a grip product to hold them in my mouth. Another friend of mine, is a dental assistant, and would love to volunteer at the event for two days. Another friend of mine would love to have her teeth cleaned, and checked, and repair any teeth and jaw problems. Another friend of mine, would love to have his mouth looking good. His teeth are crooked, and he has a lot of teeth missing. None of the above people have any type of dental insurance. Here are the names of the people above, as explained by me. Teresa Filson, (COPD), Me, Audrey C Smith, Marcia Barker, Volunteer Assistant, Vernetta Abrams, and Anthony Abrams. His last name may or may not be Abrams, as he and Vernetta are stepchildren. Can you add all of these people to your early registration list, after you read this post? I appreciate, in advance, your help, and I will see all of you there, on the 12th of September, 2019.
I'm a volunteer for CFSI, Child Find Search and Investigation for missing children. We have a missing child in your area. Please post to help bring her home safe. Thank you!! https://www.facebook.com/1792358464411528/posts/2290854367895266/
