Emergency Alerts: A Critical Multilingual Outreach Tool

When disasters strike, government officials must communicate rapidly with the public, including outreach to communities whose primary language is not English. America’s emergency alerting systems are essential tools for these times, helping authorities to warn and inform their communities in multiple languages.

The Emergency Alert System, which delivers alerts over television and radio, may be used to transmit audio and video scroll in the languages that best meet local community needs. Wireless Emergency Alerts, which are delivered to cell phones, can be sent in both English and Spanish. Both tools can effectively warn the public of imminent threats, such as severe weather, missing children, and shelter-in-place orders, as well share other public safety messages, such as boil water advisories and information on emergency shelters.

Top points for government emergency managers to know:

▪️ Federal agencies and state, local, tribal, and territorial governments are eligible to send alerts through the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts. Learn more about how to become an authorized alerting authority by FEMA.
▪️ If you are authorized to send alerts, learn how to do so in multiple languages. Here are tips on sending multilingual alerts.
▪️ State Emergency Communications Committees are organizations that help to administer the Emergency Alert System on the state level. Consider becoming involved in your state committee so that you can make the best use of this tool in your community.

These critical alert messages should be accessible to all, and the FCC remains committed to working with stakeholders towards this goal.

Tax Season Phone Scams and Taxpayer ID Theft

The tax filing deadline for 2020 taxes has been extended until May 17, but the FCC, IRS, and consumer advocates recommend that taxpayers file early to avoid becoming victims of taxpayer identity theft. That's when a fraudulent return is filed using your name without your knowledge and a refund is sent to the scammer impersonating you. To help prevent identity theft, you should always be wary of phone calls and text messages that request your personal information. Get more information at: https://go.usa.gov/xHxWA #FCCtips

IRS impersonators often use bullying tactics such as threatening legal action, including fines and jail, if you don't comply with their demands. You should know that the IRS never requests immediate payment or personal information over the phone.

What is happening to 251 phone numbers at the end of the month? Someone told me only a few area codes in the country are now having to change every local number? What happens when we google a number? Will it show the correct number to just dial from our phone?
I had a Question about GMRS radio. Who can I email to talk to about that? Im looking about asking who to talk to about Licensing. About Why its required. And who started it.

When is the internet program going to be available, the pandemic will be over before you start taking applications!
Why does most of the US have to go to dialing 10 digit local numbers so we can change a "hotline" number to 3 digit dialing? Seems incredibly short sighted, especially when there's already an established number for it...it's also going to cut down on area codes that can be used. People that plan this stuff aren't using their heads at all...only knee jerk, short sighted "solutions". I'm still wondering when the No Call List is going to start to be enforced...I've been on that list for more than 20 years...all phones, and yet I still get spam calls like crazy.
Where is the FCC with all of this lying on MSM? You trying to destroy the country too by doing nothing?

Making people dial 10 digits to call the house nextdoor is outrageous, whose brilliant idea was this?
October/November 2020 I “traded in” my iPhone 11 Pro Max (512 GB) in order to upgrade to a new model. I received the new model and sent the old model in with the supplied packaging and return label. Monday 2/8/2021 I noticed my AT&T bill had a charge for the phone that I had returned. I called AT&T and was told that they could not find the phone. After going into the actual AT&T store, AT&T customer service rep MP483R assured me that they would credit my account in the next 72 hours and to wait for a confirmation text. I never received the confirmation text. Wednesday 2/10/2021 I made another call to AT&T customer service (1800-288-2020) and spoke to another rep who shared that the previous rep had not actually taken any action and that he would be taking over. He then told me that I had been given the wrong return box and that it was sent to the wrong warehouse. None of these things are my issue, and I should not be charged for their mistake. I was charged (and told that $520.13 would be credited back to my account) and have still not received any confirmation from AT&T that action is being taken. Update March 31st, my cell phone service was suspended. I spoke to loyalty department at ATT and they told me there was nothing they could do. I then spoke to American Express who said there was nothing they could do but have me wait it out. ATT wants the full payment plus a fee and other things. I would now like to cancel my entire AT&T account and would like American Express to facilitate that AND pay for it. An entire days worth of productivity was lost today, and I ended up not being able to go to an important meeting because I had no phone. I have spent hours on hold with AT&T and received no sort of resolution, I was assured by American Express that this would be handled and that is why I pay for this card and its benefits. Update 2 March 31st, later in the day. Claudia resolution supervisor at American Express stayed on the phone with me for 2 hour, and I was transferred with her on the line 6 times. She spoke on my behalf to every person. We spoke service rep Freddy MN7KZT3. He told us that he would transfer us. He dropped our call. Claudia stayed on with me for another hour and a half and continued to speak to representative after representative. We spoke to someone else at AT&T who refused to warm transfer us, his name Juan is JV517T and we requested to speak to supervisor and he refused. Supervisor Bernard in loyalty spoke to us for about 30 minutes and determined that we needed to speak to Wireless Tech Support to create a Lost in Transit Ticket. He transferred us to Tech Support, they were no help, and told us we needed to speak to Trade In Support. After speaking to trading support, I was told that I needed to be transferred to AT&T Next Support. They then ended the call once again. Lost in Transit Case Filed: Case # CM20210331_149007266

Two people in AZ are fraudulently using my cell #. How they chose my # or why, I have no clue. I never heard of either one nor do I live in AZ yet I get calls and texts from political groups, realtors, collection agencies and more. Additionally, I receive an average of 6 to 8 calls every day with an AZ area code, all numbers unknown to me. Another AZ man, whom I've identified, sends chain texts from his multiple cell numbers. I've had the same cell # for over 20 years with little problem until I moved from AZ 2 1/2 yrs. ago. Help!
