História do Brasil Como Você Nunca Viu - YouTube

The Youtube channel “História do Brasil Como Você Nunca Viu” (The History of Brazil in a Way You've Never Seen It), created by Bruno Cerqueira and Haroldo Resende, will live stream an online discussion tomorrow, in Portuguese, on “Oliveira Lima e a longa Independência do Brasil” (Oliveira Lima and the long duration of the Independence of Brazil).

Historians Lucia Paschoal Guimarães, Teresa Malatian, and André Heráclio do Rêgo will participate in the discussion.

Brazilian diplomat and scholar Manoel de Oliveira Lima (1867-1928) had a strong connection with the United States, where he lived the final years of his life. With tens of thousands of rare books and documents on Ibero-American culture and history, his library, housed at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., constitutes the greatest Brazilian cultural treasure in the United States.

We invite you to tune into this timely discussion as we approach the bicentennial of Brazilian Independence, to be celebrated on September 7, 2022.

On September 8, the Embassy of Brazil hosted a recital at the official residence to open the calendar of celebrations in the United States for next year's bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil.

The program was carefully curated by maestro Daniel Lima, who directed the rehearsals. His selections consisted of Brazilian and Brazilian-inspired music by composers from different eras. Some have strong connections with the U.S., especially Heitor Villa-Lobos and Osvaldo Lacerda.

The recital counted with four young and very talented musicians: Nahyoung Kim, Olivia Chen, Ramilya Saubanova, and Ilana Inselbuch. All the artists are associated with the Peabody Institute Peabody Conservatory, the oldest conservatory in the U.S.

This event was a tribute to Brazil and our friendship with the U.S. Indeed, the first piece was by Gottschalk, an American composer with strong ties to Brazil. We will share a video of the recital shortly, and are excited preparing new initiatives to celebrate the bicentennial.

Next Tuesday, September 7, will mark the 199th anniversary of the Independence of Brazil. We invite our American friends to join Brazilians as we celebrate this historic milestone, memorialized in Pedro Américo’s famous painting of 1888 titled "Independence or Death".

Born in 1843 in the then Province of Paraíba, Pedro Américo benefitted from a broad education in Brazil and Europe, went on to teach at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, and was one of the drafters of the 1891 Constitution. He died in Florence in 1905.

Commissioned by the São Paulo government, Pedro Americo’s work is an imaginative portrayal of the dramatic moment on September 7, 1822, in which Pedro I (1798-1834), Brazil's first ruler, declares Brazil’s Independence from Portugal on the banks of the Ipiranga River.

Integrated actions by the Brazilian federal government are strengthening enforcement against wildfires and illegal deforestation

The Ministry of the Environment is working in partnership with other ministries and the Amazon Council to fight organized crime and protect Brazilian biomes

Published on Sept. 1, 2021

On Tuesday, August 31, the Ministers of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, of Justice and Public Safety, Anderson Torres, and the Brazilian President’s Chief of Staff, Ciro Nogueira, met at the Brazilian Presidential Palace to reinforce the federal government’s stance against wildfires and illegal deforestation. The Minister of the Environment highlighted the commitment made by President Jair Bolsonaro at the 2021 Leaders’ Summit on Climate, held in April, 2021.

"President Bolsonaro decided to double the funds for environmental crime enforcement, and this has already been done. There were R$ 228 million and now there are R$ 498 million," said Leite. “We are already using these funds to buy equipment such as laptops, cameras, remote aircrafts, and drones to strengthen enforcement."

The minister also stated that, at the request of the Brazilian President and with the support of the Office of the Chief of Staff, the Ministry of Economy had authorized the hiring of 700 new employees for Ibama and ICMBio. "This will amount to an additional R$ 200 million to combat illegal deforestation," he said.

In his speech, the minister highlighted the success of Operation Biome Guardians, carried out in partnership with the Ministries of Justice and Public Safety and of Regional Development. "For prevention purposes, the federal government is making 6,000 members available for fire brigades. We already had 3,200 men from Ibama and ICMBio, and now we will be providing an additional 6,000," said the minister.

Operation Biome Guardians is an integrated initiative that takes place from August to November, as per state needs and demands. The operation is focused on the states of Acre, Amazonas, Amapá, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins, and Goiás.

The Minister of the Environment also stated that the first of 15 fire trucks specially designed for the protection of the Brazilian biomes was delivered last week.

Reducing deforestation

According to Joaquim Leite, various government agencies are working together to reduce illegal deforestation levels to zero. And recent deforestation data has shown that the federal government’s initiative to integrate forces has produced positive results.

"In July, there was a 10% drop [in deforestation in the Amazon] relative to the same month last year, according to Deter data. And, as of now, August numbers are approximately 30-percent lower than they were last year. “For us, this is something quite significant," the Environment Minister pointed out.

Another initiative is the joint effort to help identify criminals who operate in deforested areas, involving the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to improve the systems that monitor the forests in real time, as explained by Joaquim Leite. "Today, through a partnership including INPE, Censipam, Cenima, and Brasil Mais, under the Ministry of Justice, we are able to catch criminals in the act, by monitoring these areas daily."

Before concluding his remarks, Joaquim Leite thanked the Amazon Council, headed by the Vice President, Hamilton Mourão, for their commitment to combating deforestation. "In particular, I would like to thank Vice President Mourão at the Amazon Council, who has been working jointly, articulating and coordinating operations, for this result to be achieved."

Integrated action

Minister of Justice Anderson Torres asserted that the entire crime fighting apparatus has been employed by his ministry in the fight against environmental crimes. "Through the Ministry of Justice, we will work with the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police, the National Force, and Funai [National Foundation of the Indian]. We will use all of our resources to combat crime, especially, environmental crimes," he said.

Torres said that the National Force is currently taking part in 14 operations in the Legal Amazon region. And that R$ 49 million in technology investments were made for the Brazil Plus Program, which helps the Federal Police and state police in identifying environmental crimes.
