Global Ties Forum: Foreign Policy and the People
Foreign Policy and the People: Connecting Subnational and Public Diplomacy
This past year has seen a high volume of conversations and reports about a need for greater subnational or city and state diplomacy to strengthen U.S. national security and build a more inclusive U.S. foreign policy. Subnational diplomacy has many angles and has achieved new prominence with the recent creation of an office and a Special Representative for Subnational Diplomacy at the U.S. Department of State. How do these activities across the United States connect with longstanding public diplomacy initiatives that engage international audiences? How do we elevate the role that U.S. citizens already play, and can increasingly play, as active participants in diplomacy, building the trust and the relationships we need to advance foreign policy objectives?

Experiencing Expos: U.S. Citizens' Engagement with a Vital Public Diplomacy Platform
Join us for a special conversation with Bob Clark, United States Commissioner General at Expo 2020 Dubai, on the impact of Expos on the U.S. citizens who experience them.
For many U.S. citizens who have engaged with International Expositions, also known as World’s Fairs, within the United States and overseas in the past 60 years, those experiences impacted simultaneously their worldviews, their views of their communities, and their sense of themselves.
Following the wrap-up of Expo 2020 Dubai this past March, Global Ties U.S. released an oral history paper, Experiencing Expos: An Oral History of U.S. Citizens' Engagement with World's Fairs 1962-2017, on the socio-cultural impact of these events, produced in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. In a subsequent series of 19 Community Conversations hosted in May and June 2022, Global Ties Network members across the United States reflected on this theme, emerging with a consensus that these events matter—and that they may matter even more for international cooperation and collaboration at home going forward.
In addition to Bob Clark, the event will include Anna Kaplan, Ph.D., co-author of Experiencing Expos, Global Ties U.S. Board member, Jonathan Quarles, U.S. Department of State Expo Unit Representative, Anthony Pahigian, Youth Ambassadors Brienné Coates, and Mikyle Hassanali, and Global Ties U.S. President & CEO Katherine Brown, Ph.D., as a moderator.
From all of us at Global Ties U.S., we wish you a wonderful holiday season and bright 2022. As a reminder, our office is closed between Friday, December 24 – Monday, January 3.

Global Ties Forum: How the World Sees the United States Today
What do people around the world like and dislike about U.S. society and politics? How does global public opinion affect U.S. soft power as we increasingly need allies to advance foreign policy? What does this also mean for U.S. citizens who work to support our foreign policy goals via citizen diplomacy?
As we close out 2021, join us for a conversation with Richard Wike, Ph.D., Director of Global Attitudes Research at the Pew Research Center, who will review the topline findings from his new study, “What People Around the World Like – and Dislike – About American Society and Politics.” The report explores views on U.S. technological achievements, popular culture, military, education, living standards, health care, and racial and ethnic discrimination in the United States, based on a survey of 16 economies in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, plus Canada.
Following the report overview, Liz Brailsford, President & CEO of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth, and Romesh Ratnesar, Editorial Board Member at Bloomberg Opinion, will discuss what this data means for U.S. soft power, foreign policy, and the role of citizen diplomacy.
#HappyThanksgiving! We're thankful for our incredible #CitizenDiplomacy Network and the amazing work they do to connect the world, in-person and online, through #InternationalExchange. We're inspired by your innovation and strengthened by your resilience.
