TOMORROW NIGHT! BE THERE!
Monday, 9/11 at 7:00 p.m.
NTAA's goal is to create a network of individuals whose lives have been transformed by a TRIO program

These programs, which assist low-income and first-generation students from middle school through college graduation, are known collectively as the TRIO programs. TRIO graduates are now coming together through the National TRIO Alumni Association to network with each other in their professions, to explain the importance of the people and programs that provide these key supports to students, and to give back to young people and adults struggling with the same obstacles that they have overcome.

Greetings TRIO Alumni Family!
Check out our latest blog written by our alumni intern, Neve Dole!
“Breaking Barriers in Finance: The Impact of TRIO on Student Support Services Alumna Laura Ashley Thomas”
TRIO alumna Ashley Thomas learned the value of diversity early, and she's now imparting that lesson in the corporate sector to recruit and train those who may never have envisioned a career in accounting or finance.
The National TRIO Alumni Association is excited to announce Joell Boyd as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Joell was a participant in Student Support Services at Augsburg University. She received a bachelor's degree in International Relations and completed a Spanish Major at Augsburg University. Joell works as an Associate Project Manager and a Talent Ambassador at Target Corporation!
When asked why TRIO was important to her, Joell said:
"Going to a university was such a big milestone and was hard for me to imagine. Especially from a socioeconomic perspective, as both parents did not have the means to help fund my education. They had yet to graduate from a university, so they didn't have experience or resources upfront to help guide me through the administrative process and overall academic system. It felt like I was on the outside, watching my peers prepare to attend university. Most noticeably, only a specific group of peers were set up and ready for college based on either having financial privilege or being established, high academic achievers.
I was fortunate to learn about TRIO when I was accepted to my university, as it was the most critical bridge to me being able to attend. The program equipped my family and I with the knowledge and resources to attend and pursue my academic goals. The program also created a sense of belonging with other TRIO students, helped integrate me into the campus community, and gave me the confidence to feel that I belonged and could achieve my education and career goals. My TRIO leader also greatly impacted my development and was there for me when I faced roadblocks. Both personally and academically.
Ultimately, TRIO helped me stay on track with my academic plan, and I also fulfilled my dreams of studying abroad. TRIO encouraged me to graduate on time through summer courses, and I ultimately graduated within four years. Most importantly, I gained valuable experiences throughout my academic career, became confident in my ability to succeed, and I'm proud to be part of a community with deep empathy. It was a huge stepping stone in my career and has driven me to help others."
Congratulations Joell!

Greetings, TRIO Alumni!
The National TRIO Alumni Association congratulates our intern Neve Dole, on completing our Alumni Relations Internship Program for Summer 2023.
Neve studies at Saint Louis University, studying Psychology, and serves as the Advocacy Co-Chair of the Asian American Association! Neve aims to enter the mental health, advocacy, and Asian American affairs professions. Neve was assigned with a multitude of projects, including but not limited to: Research, Data Analytics, Social Media Marketing, and Program Development!
When asked what were the lessons of your internship program, Neve replied;
"This internship has been an amazing opportunity. I’m privileged to have been accepted into the Les Aspin Center to study policymaking here in DC, and even more so that I could intern at COE. I’m appreciative of the mentorship I received through my direct supervisor, as well as all the other staff members. With their willingness to help and support me as I grew within my position, I now feel fulfilled with the effort I put into my work. I’m leaving this internship with a new perspective, a substantial understanding, and a greater sense of purpose of what it’s like to work with a nonprofit.
From learning how to efficiently collect data for analysis to writing a complete research paper, I learned about so many new things. I can easily navigate Microsoft Word and, Excel, and PowerPoint (easier than before I started this position), and I can create coherent, direct, organized spreadsheets. Additionally, I’m proud of my editing skills for TRIO alumni (FACES of TRIO), and I’m very proud that part of my blog post about Ashley Thomas was accepted and will be published. I learned when and how to apply different types of styles of writing to professional pieces of writing, to friendly networking, to fun and informative blog posts. I learned how to reach out and ask for help/clarification and that it isn’t wrong to do so. Although I wasn’t told this at work, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in DC is that people want to help and give you advice (as an intern, especially).
I learned the importance of communicating so everyone understands what’s happening. Having check-ins with my supervisor helped me understand what assignments were top priorities and what agenda items could be completed later. I’m thankful I was introduced to this concept early in my professional career so that I could build good work habits now. I learned the importance of time management. I’m a big procrastinator, and sometimes that would get to me. However, having to take a summer class and write a lot for that class, in the end I ultimately learned that I had to change my work/study habits to make it fit. Although these habits weren’t always applied, I’ve learned (and will apply to my upcoming semester at school) that time management should take precedence over other habits. It is the foundation of healthy work-life balance."
Congratulations, Neve!
COE awards a paid internship of 4-6 months each year to a graduating senior or recent college graduate who has participated in a federal TRIO program.

The National TRIO Alumni Association is thrilled to announce (Donald) Don Fleming as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Donald participated in the Student Support Services (SSS) program at Green River College (GRC). Donald first earned his Associate of Science in Pre-Engineering from GRC, then completed his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at the University of Washington. Following this accomplishment, he received his Master of Engineering in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Washington. Currently, Donald is an Associate Technical Fellow at Boeing.
When asked why TRIO was important to him, Donald said:
"TRIO SSS at Green River College was instrumental in getting me through to graduation in 2008 from GRC and setting me up for later academic and career success. Since starting college in the summer of 2000, I had dropped out twice and was really struggling with financial and mental health issues (suffering from undiagnosed bipolar-1) from 2000-2006.
When I came back to GRC for my third attempt in the winter quarter of 2007, I got connected with SSS and soon began to flourish. The support TRIO staff gave me was critical to my success. Whenever I needed help with papers, applications, or any kind of advice, they were there! I even became a math and science tutor and National Science Foundation Scholar with their help.
The advisors and mentors of GRC's SSS program helped me to develop a greater outlook of achievement in not only my life, but also my academic career. Seeing their support for students in similar situations to mine allowed me to be vulnerable and learn that asking for help was okay; that in fact, it was expected. My family instilled in me to always be self-reliant, and that asking for guidance or help was a sign of weakness. As soon as I overcame that hardship and started visiting the Student Support Services office more often, things really started to improve.
Upon graduation in Spring 2008, Green River College's TRIO program awarded me the first ever "Student of the Year" award. Overall, the encouragement, care for me, and sound guidance I received were all incredible.
In January 2016, I was selected to attend the COE conference in Washington, DC. It was an amazing event! It reminded me of all the good things about TRiO and I was able to advocate for TRIO directly to members of Congress. What an opportunity!
I can't image where I'd be without the Green River College TRIO SSS program staff."
Congratulations, Donald!

The National TRIO Alumni Association is thrilled to announce Azline Nelson as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Azline participated in the University of Northern Iowa TRIO Programs, including Talent Search (TS), and Upward Bound (UB). In pursuing a degree in higher education, Azline earned her Bachelors of Arts in International Studies from Spelman College. Afterwards, she went on to earn her MBA in Finance from The Wharton School and also, her MA in International Studies from The Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. Today, Azline works as a Specialist for The Vanguard Group.
When asked why TRIO was important to her, Azline said:
"TRIO changed my life. Witnessing my three older sisters participate in the Classic Upward Bound (CUB) program was a positive experience that encouraged me to pursue a collegiate education. I joined Talent Search in 2003 as a 6th grader and participated in CUB when I joined high school. CUB instilled academic excellence in me, and I was the salutatorian my first year and the valedictorian my second year - earning the highest grades out of all participants in the program. As a sophomore in high school, I attended the National Student Leadership Conference and met other like-minded student with the same ambitions and talent to enhance my leadership acumen.
TRIO helped me become a National Gates Millennium Scholar in 2009 as I pursed my undergraduate degree at Spelman College. Without the support of my mentor Mickey Johnson and the staff at the UNIQUE, I would not be where I am today. His encouragement and reminder that my past does NOT define who I am, has given me strength and courage to be bold and brilliant throughout my life.
TRIO is home for me, and I have an attitude of gratitude when I reflect on the virtuous cycle of support I have given and received in the program. I have spoken at CUB graduations, lead educational and leadership focused seminars and attend COE/National Policy Conferences to represent TRIO programs. TRIO will forever hold a special place in my heart and represents the foundation of my academic and personal excellence."
Congratulations, Azline!

The National TRIO Alumni Association is happy to announce Maria Ugas as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Maria completed her Baccalaureate of Arts at Western Washington University. Additionally, she received her Associate of Applied Sciences from Everett Community College while also participating in their Student Support Servies Program. Maria founded the organization, ChildrenHaveRights, as an advocate for Children's Human Rights. They are committed to ensuring all children's human rights and laws are accessible by providing resources that protect the "dignity, good health, and the material conditions that enable a child to obtain those [rights]".
When asked why TRIO was important to her, Maria said:
"I often think about how many people don't realize that opportunities to access higher education are fairly limited for people like me. I was a single mother, pregnant, with only my GED and my determination to graduate, when I enrolled at Everett Community College.
Upon arriving at college, I was intimidated by the large campus, and I struggled finding classes that worked with my busy schedule. I almost dropped out as soon as I enrolled. While attending classes, a professor noticed I was having a hard time adjusting and they reached out to me and said that as an ESL, first-generation student, I qualified for additional advising services, like TRIO!
To say that TRIO was the reason I graduated from college would be an oversimplification, but it’s not untrue. I met my college family at TRIO. They became my best friends who I studied with, who helped me with my kids while I took exams. They were there for me no matter what, always pushing me to just take one more step, no matter how tired or frustrated I got. The people at TRIO became my mentors and friends, and many of them still are!
This year, I finally graduated with my B.A. and as I reflect back at what my college experience meant to me, I realize how essential TRIO was for me and my family. Had it not been for the familiar faces available to help me with everything from math tutoring to a free breakfast meal before an early class, I don’t think I would have made it to where I am today. Thank you SO MUCH, TRIO!"
Congratulations Maria!

The National TRIO Alumni Association is happy to announce Laura Ashley Thomas as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Ashley graduated from the University of South Carolina with her Baccalaureate in Accounting and went on to earn her Master of Accountancy. She is a proud alumna of USC’s TRIO Program, Student Support Services. Currently, Ashley works as the Director of Finance at Thermo Fisher Scientific!
When asked why TRIO was significant to Ashley, she said:
"The experiences I had and the people I met during my time as an Opportunity Scholars Program (OSP) student continue to shape my life today. I had the opportunity to introduce and establish a TRIO Program at Thermo Fisher Scientific, as a way to reach out and build partnerships with current TRIO students. I’m grateful for my time in the TRIO Program at USC because I gained invaluable experiences that shaped my perspective of other cultures and the arts.”

The National TRIO Alumni Association is thrilled to include Chantelle George as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Chantelle is an alumnus of Louisiana State University's TRIO Programs, Student Support Services and Educational Opportunity Centers. She earned her B.S. in Biology and a B.S. in Medical Technology from LSU. Additionally, she received her Master's in Education : Higher Education from the University of Houston. Chantelle is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Higher Education at Louisiana State University and is graduating with the class of 2024!
As the Founder and CEO of Chantelle George Consulting, Chantelle successfully established and maintained partnerships with K-12 districts, higher education institutions, and nonprofits to improve various organization's postsecondary practices.
When Chantelle was asked why TRIO was significant to her, she said:
"I first learned about Student Support Services (SSS) during my freshman year at LSU. I was a Biology major and wanted information on tutoring services and advising. My residential assistant recommended I visit the “SSS” office. I wasn’t sure what SSS meant but decided to visit the office. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the LSU program staff (Debbie Hollier and Craig Winchell) who were extremely welcoming and attentive to my needs.
The SSS program provided printing services, tutoring, peer mentoring, and career coaching. We became a family in that office. Many of the students I met through SSS became long-lasting friends throughout my tenure at LSU. I didn’t realize how this world would come back full circle.
After graduating, I transitioned into the field of higher education and college access. I had moved to Houston, TX where I was working with high school students across the city, many of whom were involved in Upward Bound. I would soon hear and learn about TRIO and the different programs that fell under its umbrella. I realized how programs like Upward Bound and SSS were all a part of a larger initiative — TRIO. From working with high school students to non-traditional college students via the TRIO EOC program and partnering in building the TRIO community supporter program at BRCC, my career has encompassed many aspects of this amazing program.
As an alum, I am thrilled to give back to a community that gave so much to me. TRIO has impacted the lives of millions of students across the country. It has truly played a pivotal role in my own journey as a student and now professional. I’m honored to be an alum and hope to continue to live in the mission of TRIO in my daily work."
Congratulations Chantelle!

The National TRIO Alumni Association is proud to feature Bennett Hendrix III as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Bennett is a committed cybersecurity professional and founder of CyberBennett. He is an alumnus of Student Support Services from Southeast Missouri State University with a B.S. in Cybersecurity!
"My experience in TRIO was terrific. In 2014, I was a first-generation, low-income student who wanted to study cybersecurity. This field was not a well-known area of study at the time. I struggled in the beginning, often thinking that graduation seemed unlikely. However, I succeeded because of the dedication and endless support from the Southeast Missouri State University TRIO program (shoutout to Trent, Valdis, and Kei-Shae). While enrolled in SEMO's TRIO Program, these folks became more than just advisors; I formed good, long-lasting connections with them.
I am the founder of CyberBennett, a cybersecurity awareness company that collaborates with Fortune 500 companies to educate audiences on different cybersecurity topics. Through my work as a cybersecurity professional, I specifically focus on educating youth in underrepresented communities because cybersecurity is a solution to resolving poverty. I also want to share my story to inspire young audiences that it is possible to achieve your goals."
Congratulaitons, Bennett!

Greetings, TRIO! - We have a NEW Ph.D. on the Horizon, Just Defended TODAY! Please join us in congratulating Dr. Nelson!
The National TRIO Alumni Association is pleased to feature Dr. Carlin Nelson, MPH,CPH,FRSPH, CHES ® as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Dr. Nelson is a proud Epidemiologist at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and a proud alumnus of Talent Search and Upward Bound from the College of Charleston. Dr. Nelson obtained his A.S., from Trident Technical College, B.A., in Public Health from the College of Charleston, and Masters of Public Health from The Medical University of South Carolina. Excitingly, he defended his Ph.D. in Public Health in Epidemiology at Walden University today!
When asked why TRIO was meaningful to him, he explained:
"TRIO has immensely impacted my life. I’ve always understood that I was expected to run the same race as everybody else, although I only came to the race with an eighth of the needed tools. TRIO provided the extra support that I needed to be prosperous and resilient. They helped me to accept that I wasn’t undesirable and that while my circumstances were a reality, they did not have to be permanent. By providing academic, emotional, and social skills, TRIO challenged me to ask questions, ask/accept help, be open-minded, and give myself grace. TRIO brought to life that representation matters by constantly surrounding me with positive people who identified with me physically and had similar experiences. Because they did it, I could and would do it. TRIO has really shaped how I intrinsically motivate.
TRIO is meaningful to me because it’s a family of programs that don’t just become invisible once you’ve finished the program. TRIO really treats its participants like family members. I did not have many positive male figures growing up, and the men of TRIO taught me how to be a man of distinction and substance. TRIO is also meaningful to me because it taught me how to network. It challenged my classmates and I on how to interact and maneuver through things together because, ultimately, we have the same end goal in mind. TRIO hasn’t impacted my life immensely. It affects my life immensely because I still use the skills and connections I gained daily."
Congratulations, Dr. Nelson!

All TRIO Alumni, TAP IN! The National TRIO Alumni Association would like to recognize, Jordan (Allison) Decker as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Jordan is a University Recruiter for Meta and an alumna of Student Support Services at the University of Arizona! Jordan also obtained her Bachelor's of Journalism and Gender and Women's Studies from the University of Arizona! When asked, how TRIO has impacted you, she replied: "When I started in TRIO, I had no idea what to expect! Meeting my mentor (shout-out Arlett!!) and cohort at the beginning of my college experience gave me the support system that I didn't know that I needed. It wasn't until I was surrounded by people like me that I wasn't alone in my impostor syndrome, my confusion about navigating the world of higher education, student loans, my guilt for leaving home, and my fear of disappointing my family. TRIO showed me how to get involved on campus, find a work-study job, talk to professors, and so much more. To my detriment, I got so busy juggling classes, work, and involvement that I fell out of my TRIO involvement during my last couple of years. It is my biggest regret about my college experience! I thought I didn't "need" the program since I had found some sort of a path for myself, but I was right at the tip of the TRIO iceberg. There was so much more for me to learn and gain from my mentors and peers. I had an extremely difficult time finding my first job after college, and had I known about or utilized the resources that TRIO provides, I know I wouldn't have struggled nearly as much. Without TRIO, I would not be comfortable or proud to identify as a first-generation college graduate or low-income student. TRIO showed me that while my background could put me at a higher risk of not succeeding academically, it was not something to be ashamed of. There are so many skills that we possess as first-generation students that we don't realize we have, and we deserve the resources that TRIO provides to show us
The National TRIO Alumni Association is pleased to feature Dr. Terainer Brown, Ph.D. as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Dr. Brown is the proud Chief Academic Officer for the U.S. Air Force (Pacific) and an alumna of the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement program at Wayne State University. Dr. Brown received her Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Education-K12 Dance from Wayne State University. She obtained her Master's of Arts in Education Leadership from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, concentrating in Higher Education Student Affairs and obtained her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Research, and Policy from the University of Colorado, concentrating in Education Policy and Student Services. When asked why TRIO was meaningful to her, she explained: "After receiving several email invitations during my sophomore year, I entered a room full of possibilities. My former program director stood before a group of skeptical, nervous, ambitious, and uncertain college students looking for an opportunity to excel. I was among that group. As the first person in my family to attend college, the opportunity to earn a Ph.D. seemed unattainable. If I'm being honest, I was struggling to complete my undergraduate degree. My struggles were not academic but rather social and emotional challenges. This is where TRIO stepped in and filled in the gaps. I was admitted into the McNair Scholars program and worked as an intern for the GEAR/UP College Day program. This was my TRIO family! The combination of these two roles helped me think holistically about my future possibilities and affirmed my desire to give back to the community. I received many mentorships, guidance, preparation, and hands-on experiences as a McNair Scholar. Many of these lessons I have carried into my professional roles. In addition, my experience working with the GEAR/UP program students gave me the space to help middle and high school students prepare for their transition into postsecondary edu

The National TRIO Alumni Association is pleased to feature Ernest Cornell Evans, M.S.Ed as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Ernest is a proud Director of Student Involvement and Greek Life at Franklin College. He is also an alumnus of TRIO Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math and Science, and Student Support Services at the Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Ernest received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from IUPUI, a Master of Science in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Indiana University Bloomington, and he is currently pursuing a PhD in Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies at Howard University. When asked why TRIO was meaningful to him, he explained: "Being part of IUPUI Upward Bound showed me that I, as a young Black boy from the inner city, could achieve any goal I set my mind to. Nathan Harris, the Director of IUPUI Upward Bound at the time, showed all of us so much love and support. He made sure we had EVERYTHING we needed to be successful. When I told Mr. Harris that I wanted to get a doctorate, he connected me to Black men who were pursuing their doctorate and who are mentoring me even today. While in college, being part of the Student Support Services program at IUPUI was the reason I was able to complete my degree. Barbara Browning made sure all of her students had what they needed to complete their degrees academically and financially. Her support and the support of the rest of the staff were unwavering. They created a space where we were able to hang out socially while growing personally and academically. I learned something new every day that I spent in the office." The National TRIO Alumni Association is pleased to feature Abraham Sculley as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Abraham is a proud CEO & Educational Consultant for Speaks 2 Inspire and an alumnus of TRIO Student Support Services at the University of West Florida! Abraham received his Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology from the University of West Florida. About the Organization: Speaks 2 Inspire is committed to eradicating mental health stigma and supporting the well-being of young adults. They work with colleges and universities to create and implement safe, comprehensive programs for campuses across the nation. When asked why TRIO was meaningful to him, he explained: "I grew up in a Christian family with two Jamaican immigrant parents in South Florida. After my high school graduation, I decided to move 700 miles from home to attend college. While on campus, I quickly realized that my parents taught me everything I needed to know about grit, resilience, and working hard. However, I was ill-prepared to handle the social and emotional challenges that come as a first-generation college student. I left home in 2014 to pursue a degree at the University of West Florida. During my first year, I experienced feelings of loneliness, overwhelming stress, and the burden of succeeding in showing my family what was possible. Everything that I was dealing with as a freshman led to me being diagnosed with depression. It was extremely tough. But, I found a home away from home as a TRIO scholar. I connected with my advisors and peers in the TRIO building and established relationships that still flourish today. I will never forget when Ms. Wanda saw me walk to my apartment on a cold evening. She pulled over, picked me up, took me to Target, and bought me a pair of mittens. As a young kid from Miami, Florida, I didn't know Florida could get so cold, but I had a community that cared for me like I was their own. After graduating from college, I decided to establish my own consulting age
The National TRIO Alumni Association is pleased to feature LaMarcus Hall, M Ed., MS as our FACES of TRIO of the week! LaMarcus is a proud Adjunct Professor at Martin University, and an alumnus of Talent Search and Upward Bound at the University of Georgia. LaMarcus obtained both his Bachelor's of Science in Child & Family Development and Master's of Education in Higher Education and Administration from Georgia Southern University. Additionally, he received a second Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at Purdue University. When asked why TRIO was meaningful to him, he explained: Miss Catherine Jackson is one of the most influential persons in my life. She was the TRIO professional that introduced me to the TRIO program at the University of Georgia. During my experience in TRIO at Talent Search and Upward Bound, she saw more in me than I could see in myself. Her guidance and the TRIO program truly impacted me because they allowed me to experience the places I encountered that I did not know were possible. TRIO has significantly impacted my leadership and professionalism, which has allowed me to return to TRIO as an alumnus to give back to our future leaders of tomorrow. I represent TRIO in my entire personal and professional network, not because of recognition but to promote change for all, especially males of color. I refuse to "sell out" my community because of afforded opportunities, so I choose to reach back to the programs that provided me with the tools to be the influence I am today. I simply tell my professional TRIO network that if there is any need to advocate for TRIO or mentor young males, in the words of Nas, "Count me in." Congratulations, LaMarcus! #TRIOworks #TRIOalumni #5millionstrong Are you a TRIO alumni? Join Today! www.trioalumni.org

The National TRIO Alumni Association is pleased to feature Tracie Sanchez as our FACES of TRIO of the week! Tracie is a proud Performance Auditor for the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) in Washington, D.C., and an alumna of Upward Bound at Occidental College and the McNair Scholars program at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA). Tracie obtained both her Bachelor of Chicano/a Studies and her Master of Higher Education and Organizational Change from UCLA, and a Master of Public Policy from George Washington University. GAO is known as the "watchdog" of the U.S. Congress and provides legislators with nonpartisan oversight of federal agencies. When asked why TRIO was meaningful to her, she explained: "TRIO supported my academic journey in more ways than I can count. For example, during high school, the Upward Bound program offered me an opportunity to experience dorm life at Occidental College with other inner-city students who were determined to beat the odds and attend higher education. During college, the UCLA McNair Scholars program offered me the opportunity to conduct undergraduate research and present at various conferences. TRIO gave me mentors that, till this day, remain my sounding board when I am preparing for the next step in my academic or professional career. I appreciate the TRIO family and know they will continue to cheer me on. TRIO has my back. #TRIOWORKS!"
