First beam accelerated in PIP-II cryomodules, ushering in new era of superconducting-accelerator operation at Fermilab

BIG NEWS: The PIP-II Injector Test Facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory just delivered its first proton beam! This is a major milestone for PIP-II, the lab's new superconducting particle accelerator.

The PIP-II accelerator — the first major U.S. accelerator project with multinational contributions — will enable the production of intense neutrino beams to the international, Fermilab-hosted Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. The versatile 800-million-electronvolt, 215-meter-long machine will also be capable of sending high-power proton beams of various patterns to other Fermilab experiments, bolstering the long-term future of the lab.

Check out U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management's new interactive map of its completed cleanup sites! Visit https://rb.gy/ycgdue to view the map, which allows users to zoom in and out of locations, and click on completed cleanup sites for details. As the largest environmental cleanup program in the world, EM has been charged with the responsibility of cleaning up 107 sites across the country whose area is equal to the combined area of Rhode Island and Delaware. There are 16 remaining EM sites where cleanup work is currently ongoing, and 91 sites where EM has completed cleanup.

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management has reached another 2020 priority with the removal of 11 million tons of contaminated material from the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project site in Utah. This puts the project two-thirds of the way toward safely completing the disposition of mill tailings, which are transported by rail in locked steel containers to the Crescent Junction disposal cell, located 30 miles north of the Moab site. Why pursue STEM? Just ask Renée, Char, Kate, and Megan, the stars of our latest #STEMRising Women @ Energy poster series.

“What we do over the next 30 years may determine the future of the planet,” said Kate Anderson, Senior Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

“Every day is a new opportunity and more importantly every single day I have a chance to make a difference for at least one person,” said Renée Breyer, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Associate Director for Strategic Human Resources Management.

“Everyone should be taught that they too can have an accomplished STEM career,” said Char Sample, Cybersecurity Researcher at Idaho National Laboratory.

“Educating women, girls, and underrepresented groups early on about what a future in STEM could include will reduce the misconception that all careers in STEM require lab coats,” said Megan Yachini, Project Management staffer at the National Energy Technology Laboratory.

Crews working at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management Idaho site Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project use an in-situ object counting system (ISOCS) in conjunction with a gamma camera and associated software, to characterize wastes by measuring gamma rays emanating from waste containers. Using this system, crews have been able to characterize wastes from more than 1,025 containers that would have been difficult or impossible to address.
