Plot thickens for historial re-enactment | The Royal Gazette:Bermuda News

Come help us celebrate Bermuda's contribution to the American Colonists uprising against the king and the beginnings of the American Revolution. The Gunpowder Plot was a dastardly treasonous affair and so much fun to reenact. Special thanks to the Sons of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution for the three year series across the East Coast of the United States celebrating the Bermuda Gunpowder Plot.

Planning the logistics for this weeks elaborate re-enactment of the Gunpowder Plot, the first of its kind, has grown into a plot of its own.The team gathered yesterday at Tobacco Bay for some on-site preparations to recreate the infamous 1775 conspiracy, which is hoped to grow into a regular event.…

Reception Speech – Second Bermuda Day Reception
Washington, D.C.
May 20, 2015
Reception Welcome and Introductory Remarks--Ms. Cheryl Packwood

On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, the people of Bermuda and the members of Bermuda’s international business community, I want to welcome all of you to our second official Bermuda Day Reception in the United States. We have many distinguished guests here this evening and I want to thank each and everyone of you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to help us celebrate this wonderful holiday away from our precious Island home. I do want to recognize Mr. Eric Hepburn, Consul General of the Embassy of the United Kingdom and his wife, Deborah. We have the Ambassador for Barbados, the Secretary for Trade at the Malaysian Embassy and a representative from the Republic of Germany as well. I especially want to thank the Bermuda Department of Tourism for sponsoring this event. Without the dedication of Victoria Isley and her team including Ms. Ticole Swan and their staff, none of this would be possible. Thank you to Vekeisha Rhoden our research analyst in the Government office in DC. But, frankly without Goslings, we would not have the Dark n Stormies to make us feel like we are really at home. So please enjoy our signature drink: Dark ‘n Stormy.

I am Cheryl Packwood, Overseas Representative of the Government of Bermuda. Our Premier, The Hon. Michael Dunkley sends his best wishes and asks that next year instead of joining me in DC to celebrate Bermuda Day that you join the Bermudian people on our lovely Island in the middle of the North Atlantic.

Vicktoria Isley is going to speak to you briefly so I will not tell you too much about Bermuda except that our Island is not a very large place, just a little over 21 square miles with a population of approximately 65,000 inhabitants just 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina.
Bermuda Day is our national holiday and in Bermuda we refer to it locally as May 24th or the 24th of May. The holiday originally was Empire Day and celebrated Queen Victoria’s Birthday. It changed in 1958 to British Empire Day and then became Commonwealth Day in 1966. However, with much of the turmoil of the 1960’s and 70’s taking place on this side of the Pond, as we call it, Bermuda, following in the footsteps of that famous song, “Bermuda is another world”, opted to have its own national holiday called Bermuda Day.

We celebrate our culture on this day with a parade, a half marathon, our traditional first swim at the beach after a long cold winter, picnics, boating and much much more. The month of May has become Heritage month since the 1980s and May 24th or Bermuda Day is the culmination of all our pride and joy and we celebrate what it means to be Bermudian. Indeed, our parade celebrates our many cultures from African, to Portuguese, to Pilipino, Indian, European, British, Native American and then the beautiful mixture that can only be Bermudian.

Bermudians are already getting ready for a great weekend of activities. This is a big holiday for us. The summer is upon us and only we know how to celebrate it. With that, I would like to introduce you to Ms. Victoria Isley.
