Illinois: Recidivism Outcomes of Illinois Prison Work Release Program Participants

Finding employment after incarceration can be challenging due to barriers such as limited education and employer stigma. Yet, research suggests that post-release employment can help reduce recidivism. Illinois’ Adult Transition Centers (ATCs) provide work release opportunities that may help formerly incarcerated individuals secure employment and successfully reintegrate into their communities. This study examines the impact of ATC participation on recidivism outcomes and offers insights into the role work release programs play in supporting reentry and reducing repeat offending.

Idaho: School Resource Officers in Idaho

School safety and the role of school resource officers (SROs) have become increasingly prominent topics of discussion in recent years. In 2020, a group of Idaho stakeholders established a statewide working group to support SROs through training, networking opportunities and to develop best practices.
In 2022, the working group partnered with the Idaho Statistical Analysis Center (ISAC) to conduct an exploratory study of SROs across the state. The resulting report examines the prevalence of SROs in Idaho schools, the nature of crime occurring on school grounds, and the roles and responsibilities of SROs. It also explores whether school administrators’ and school board members’ perceptions of those roles align with SROs’ own perspectives on their work and responsibilities.

As NIBRS becomes the nation’s sole source of incident-level crime data, inconsistent analysis, classification, and counting practices are producing different answers to the same questions about crime. This presentation examines the consequences for the public, press, and policymakers—and outlines a path toward restoring comparability and trust in the data.

Topics include:

• How differing definitions of “violent crime” and counting units (incident, victim, offense) produce materially different totals from the same records.

• SEARCH’s strategy for strengthening NIBRS through shared analysis standards, source-level analysis, and standardized counting methodologies.
