Latinos for a Secure Retirement

Latinos for a Secure Retirement Our mission is to safeguard the security of seniors.

We seek to protect Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, improve retirement savings among Latinos, and ensure access to life saving vaccinations by mobilizing the Latino community. The Latinos for a Secure Retirement (LSR) coalition was launched in 2011 to serve as the pre-eminent voice for the Hispanic Americans in the fight to defend Social Security as new threats emerged against the 75 year-old

program. LSR’s mission includes protecting Social Security, strengthening Medicare, increasing pension access and financial literacy, ensuring Latino seniors get equal access to Older American Act services, and working to ensure more Latinos are in key policy and advocacy positions important to an aging population. The LSR coalition brings together some of the strongest and most prominent advocates for Latinos in the country including the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), The Hispanic Federation, the National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA), MANA- A National Latina Organization, SER- Jobs for Progress National, Inc., the Institute for the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Elderly, the American GI Forum, the National Association for Hispanic Elderly, and the National Hispanic Medical Association.

Medicaid is under attack and we have an opportunity to fight back.

Medicaid provides health insurance to our friends, families, and neighbors who make less than $15,650 a year. It’s a critical lifeline and source of stability and dignity that needs to be expanded, not cut.

Last year, the Trump administration pushed through $1 trillion in cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. A big part of that was instituting new bureaucracy for people who rely on Medicaid, using the guise of a “work requirement” to drop millions from their benefits.

But we’ve got one last chance to stop this policy. The Trump Administration just published a final rule that will strip health coverage from millions of working families through punitive Medicaid cuts disguised as “work requirements.”

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is accepting public comments until July 31, 2026.

Even if you believe that this is hopeless, and the Trump administration will charge ahead regardless, overwhelming opposition in public comment periods will be cited during the inevitable legal challenges to the implementation. Your voice matters, right now.

Thank you Congressman Joe Neguse for trying to protect the Medicaid coverage that is critical for millions of American families.

Between 5 million and 10 million people could lose Medicaid coverage in 2028 due to the new CMS rule.

Today, the Social Security and Medicare Trustees released their annual report on the programs' finances. The report states that the Social Security Trust Fund is able to pay full benefits until 2032 and the Medicare Trust Fund until 2033.

"Social Security is critical for seniors, disabled, and surviving spouses and children, but the latest report shows that rising income inequality continues to rob Social Security of its funding," said Latinos for a Secure Retirement's Executive Director Jeff Cruz.

“Its time for Congress to stand up to the billionaires and scrap the earnings cap loophole that allows the wealthiest to pay significantly lower rates then regular Americans. Doing so can make the program fully solvent for the next 75 years and allow increased benefits for those that need it most."
