The Percy Julian Institute's STEM field trips, robotics, and coding programs are helping to replenish the STEM pipeline. The next step in PJI's evolution is to create affordable, accessible summer STEM opportunities. In addition to summer programs, there will be year-round community outreach work in the form of traveling STEM exhibits, visits to schools, libraries, and science festivals. With the support of the community, PJI will help close the gap in participation by people of color in STEM career fields.

On October 30, the Percy Julian Institute sponsored a field trip to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum (Chantilly, VA) for 30 students from Stonewall Middle School (Manassas). They visited the Mission to Mars exhibit where they explored the climate and geology of Mars, along with the challenges of robotic exploration in space. They also visited the McDonnell Space Hangar where they explored the Space Shuttle Discovery and other space artifacts that trace our history, science, and technology in space. Great learning experience for students. https://www.dapcdc.org.

The Percy Julian Institute sponsored a field trip to the Smithsonian Museum of African Art in DC for 25 middle school students. They received a specially customized STEAM (STEM + the Arts) tour. The tour showed them how STEM and Art can, and should be, used to complement and enhance each other. They examined objects and learn about the ideas that impacted African art and much more. The students asked many questions, said they learned a great deal, and really enjoyed the experience.

There is a looming shortage of STEM professionals in the future. Fewer U.S. students have interest in STEM careers. Minorities and women are significantly underrepresented. The DAPCDC’s Percy Julian Institute (PJI) conducts programs to address both critical needs.
PJI focuses on students, parents, and teachers.

The Daniel A. Payne's Percy Julian Institute exposes middle school students and their parents to STEM experiences and to opportunities available in STEM fields. Our goals include eliminating "STEM-phobia". We work with middle schools to give students hands-on STEM experiences, exposure to STEM professionals, and work to equip parents with the tools to support and sustain their child's interest in STEM.
