Our jurisdiction also includes analyzing proposals to build liquefied natural gas terminals and interstate natural gas pipelines. We also license hydropower projects. Our team of technical professionals is shaping the future of the energy industry. These engineers, scientists, analysts and attorneys work collaboratively to ensure that the industry delivers reliable, efficient and sustainable energy, impacting the daily lives of all Americans. We regulate more than 1800 owners, operators and users of the bulk-power system, made up of almost 200,000 miles of transmission lines and generating more than 4.1 trillion kilowatts of electricity each year. Engineers review more than 1600 hydroelectric projects at more than 2500 dams, generating 54 gigawatts of hydroelectric capacity. To help support the modernization of the electric system here in the U.S., we are focusing on issues associated with a smarter grid. These include interoperability standards and mandatory reliability standards. While we encourage operators to adopt new standards, we also stand ready to enforce the rules – our enforcement powers include the power to fine companies up to $1 million per day per violation. We are not standing still, either. We continue to pursue energy market reforms that foster the development of renewable energy resources. We have approved more than 150 permits for hydrokinetic projects, working towards a future of renewable energies with the potential to generate cost-effective electricity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week (then called “Negro History Week”) nearly a century ago. The event was first celebrated during the second week of February 1926, selected because it coincides with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and abolitionist/writer Frederick Douglass (February 14).

That week would continue to be set aside for the event until 1976 when, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, it was expanded to a month. Since then, U.S. presidents have proclaimed February as National African American History Month. This year’s Theme is The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity.

"I was very impressed with FERC when I interviewed for the position and when I started my internship. The people were all really friendly and available to help me get my computer set up since I am interning remote. Everyone there is extremely intelligent people, but also want to help you grow as an individual."

Would you recommend this internship program to a friend?
"Absolutely! The internship program with FERC's Office of Administrative Law Judges is amazing and everyone is invested in you. The people in the office want you to excel and learn as much as you can while your there. It is a lot of work, but it has been really rewarding so far!"
