✨BHM Spotlight: 1000BlackGirlBooks✨

1000BlackGirlBooks 📚👩🏾‍🦱is a campaign founded by Marley Davis when she was only 11 years old. In 2015, she aimed to collect 1000 books featuring a black girl protagonist by 2016. Catching significant attention from social media, news channels, and educational organizations, 1000BlackGirlBooks has collected over 13,000 books. Marley advises parents to listen to their children and encourage them to read because it provides a pathway to freedom and imagination. On the 1000BlackGirlBooks website, individuals can find over 1,000 books cataloged by reading level, making it easy for people of all ages to find books. Many books that limit black people to side characters, especially books before the 21st century with non-black authors, may promote neg*tive stereotypes about black individuals. 1000BlackGirlBooks reverses these structural issues in literature through its dedication to supplying people of all ages and ethnicities with books featuring people of color as the protagonist.

✨BHM Spotlight: Joshua Gibson✨

Starting his career in the Negro National League in 1930, the athletic career of ⚾️would have been something for the world to see if he had not been taken away so soon. In his years playing in the Negro Leagues, his stats spoke of his capabilities as one of the greatest. Nearly had 800 home runs throughout his short-lived career. His exclusion from the Major Leagues did not cap the extent of his greatness and success. Throughout his life, being constantly called “the black Babe Ruth” or compared to Jackie Robinson indeed hindered his success and the ability for people to recognize him for who he was, Joshua Gibson. He later became the second player in the Negro Leagues to earn his place in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. His achievements in baseball will continue to gradually be recognized. We occasionally focus on the first, but we fail to acknowledge that ultimately being the first, second, or third is still contributing to greater progress. We can't just achieve something once, but time and time again.

✨BHM Spotlight: Jane Bolin✨

Born in 1908, 👩🏽‍🎓📚 lived her life breaking boundaries. As the daughter of an attorney, her father inspired her to dream big dreams and achieve them. This inspired her to hope to work in this same profession, but also to push the limitations placed on her for being a woman, and more so an African American woman. Jane served on the NYC Domestic Relations Court for 40 years, fighting for children’s rights. She specialized in cases about juvenile delinquency, adoptions, child welfare, and women and children in desperate need of aid.

Jane Bolin is an inspiration to all those who may feel discouraged, especially in a heavily male-dominated profession, and feel afraid to be the first or alone. Imagine if Jane had not persevered, graduated, and paved the way for so many young African Americans? She would not have given you the hope to accomplish just as much, if not more.

JANUARY 6TH DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ACTION: Today marks one year since the violent and deadly attacks at the U.S. Capitol. A broad coalition of more than 130 organizations are holding a D.C. vigil near the U.S. Capitol with more than 350 events planned across the country. To prevent this kind of attack from happening again, advocates are demanding elected leaders pass urgent legislation that will protect the right to vote including the Freedom to Vote Act, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and DC Statehood.

Reps. Veronica Escobar (D-TX), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Andy Kim (D-NJ), Jamie Raskin (D-MD), and Sen. Chris Van Hollen will also provide remarks and offer first-hand accounts of the January 6th attacks.
