📉 Our economy lost 140,000 jobs in December- @usdol
Women lost 156,000 jobs,
while men gained 16,000 jobs.
meaning that the net number of jobs lost were held entirely by women; and they were overwhelmingly women of color.

Just some accurate lines from a comedy that does not seems funny after January 6, 2020.

Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021 never had to happen. And yet, given the obstruction of some elected officials — from the outgoing President to some members of Congress — it was almost inevitable.
Protestors, egged on by Trump and encouraged by obstructionists in Congress, overran and occupied the U.S. Capitol – the first time the 220-year-old building had suffered such sacrilege since British troops partly burned it in 1814.
More on our #VoicesForHumanNeeds blog:
The obstructionists have empowered white nationalists who now commit violence, while blaming anyone who opposes their agenda of hate.

Today, amidst the pandemic & a crucial upcoming election in #Georgia. we are excited to introduce “Las Poderosas” because every Latina is a superhero. We are here together to create change for our families and communities when we participate, we vote.
Thank you to #SomosArte, Aida Rodriguez, Maria Elena Salinas, Cristela Alonzo, MayaintheMoment and Las Cafeteras.
It's increasingly clear that if Trump doesn't sign the #COVIDRelief & Omnibus funding bill, we will face:
⚠️weeks of interrupted unemployment benefits
⚠️eviction moratorium ended and no renter relief
⚠️looming threat of a govt. shutdown
⚠️inadequate distribution of vaccines
Mr. President @realdonaldtrump, SIGN IT! Sign the bill.
While you sit in comfort, millions are threatened w/ eviction, millions of workers will lose pay, and more lives will be put in harm's way. We need #COVIDReliefNOW!

President Trump is threatening to let the government shutdown and COVID-19 relief programs expire. We need you to call your Senators TODAY and tell them to increase the COVID-19 stimulus payment to $2,000 to keep the government open and provide critical funds to unemployed workers and families. 📌📌📌 Things we have learnt (or reinforced) over the course of the pandemic:
➡️ Black, Latino and other households of color are more likely to experience food insufficiency and rent hardship.
➡️ Black workers are more likely work front-line jobs.
➡️ Unemployment is high, with job losses in low-paid industries.
➡️ Many jobless folkx cannot get through the system to file for unemployment benefits.
✅ Adequate #COVIDRelief is not just a public health issue, or an economic one. It’s also a racial justice issue. People of color are, again, bearing the brunt of this pandemic, while working the front-lines to protect America. This chorus has pretty much been on repeat🔂 throughout our history.
BOTTOMLINE: Congress must pass the long-overdue aid, and override the President if need be.

⚡️NEWSFLASH: $600 stimulus checks would not cover a family's average rent in any state. 😳
Statement: CHN URGES SWIFT ENACTMENT OF THE “LONG OVERDUE” COVID-19 RELIEF PACKAGE.
The #COVIDRelief bill is long overdue, and Congress must pass it. Yet, it is FAR from all that is needed.
CHN and our members are thankful that millions of the jobless will continue to receive unemployment aid, that the eviction moratorium has been extended, and that $25B in emergency rental assistance has been included.
We are glad to see for the increase in SNAP and other nutrition aid, the $600 payment for millions of families, and mixed-status immigrant families. The package also includes assistance for schools, child care, vaccine distribution support, access to broadband, etc.
On paid leave, employers will get a tax credit for providing, but there is no requirement that they do so. PL remains a vital strategy to keep people safe and economically whole. Congress has not done enough to secure it for millions of people.
It is also very short-sighted to refuse to help states and localities trying to cope with lost revenues while carrying out essential, frontline functions. Not funding our states and cities is a major failure of this relief package.
The pandemic’s impact on our nation’s health and economy has been harsh and the recovery will not be swift. In January, the new #BidenHarris Administration and the new Congress must immediately work to remedy the failings and expand the important help about to be provided.
REMINDER: social distancing comfortably and working from home is a privilege.
🎄 🎁 This Holidays season, please consider sharing your comfort by donating to local organizations for the jobless and houseless.

Last August, Paige McConnell became the first in her family to enroll in college, signing up for classes at Tennessee’s Roane State Community College. Two weeks later, she dropped out.
McConnell, 18, could not make online classes work for her. She does not have WiFi at her rural home in Crossville, Tenn. She tried to go to the library, but their services were curtailed due to the pandemic. She even spent hours in a McDonald’s parking lot, using the restaurant’s Internet, but she kept getting kicked off the network.
McConnell is hardly alone. More written by Grace Mulamba on CHN's #VoicesForHumanNeeds blog.

🎄It's not a #Christmas list if we need it to survive.
The Senate needs to extend UI, eviction moratorium, and more ASAP. If not, the U.S. will lose 5.1 more jobs due to decrease in spending, and face a wave of eviction- in the middle of a pandemic.
Stimulus checks are urgently needed to trigger spending, and revitalize the economy. This time, immigrants & mixed-status families MUST be included in any new #COVIDRelief stimulus payments. Last time, they were not.
🤷🏻♀️ Economy can't move ahead if we exclude immigrants- a major, critical part of our economy.

STIMULUS TALK UPDATE:
Senator Pat Toomey is holding up negotiations by introducing a far-reaching restrictions on the Fed at the last minute, jeopardizing urgently needed help for the jobless, distribution of the vaccines, help to small biz, etc. Sen. Toomey is recklessly risking a gov't shutdown as well as loss of jobless aid and eviction protections. This move threatens the economy while at the same time tying the hands of the Fed. to respond. Mitch McConnell needs to reject this, and deliver the needed aid.

💰 The wealth of 644 U.S. billionaires grew roughly $931 Billion in the first 6 months of the pandemic– a 32% increase.
Meanwhile, families are getting evicted during the Holidays, people are stealing food just to get by, and thousands are dying everyday. Yet, the Senate are holding up COVID relief because they worried that corporations may not get immunity from COVID lawsuits?

WaPo: More Americans are shoplifting food as aid runs out in the pandemic
Stealing to survive. Yes, you read that right. And it is heartbreaking how we got to this place, as Congress continues to play politics and stall on the next COVID relief package.
"Jean, 21, was successfully juggling college and a job, and had just bought her first car, when the pandemic crashed down. Her son’s day-care center suddenly closed in April, forcing her to give up her $15-an-hour job as a receptionist. But quitting meant she didn’t qualify for unemployment benefits. She says she was denied food stamps at least three times and gave up on local food banks because of the lines.
With no stimulus aid and her savings gone by May, Jean said she was out of options. So she began sneaking food into her son’s stroller at the local Walmart. She said she’d take things like ground beef, rice or potatoes but always pay for something small, like a packet of M&M’s. Each time, she’d tell herself that God would understand."

“Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of ok for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars.
But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
This was the Captain Samuel Vimes ‘Boots’ theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

On June 20, right between the primaries and the conventions, we rise together. Join us at June2020.org! The Mass Poor People's Assembly & Moral March on Washington is going digital! On June 20th, we will hold the largest digital and social media gathering of poor and low-wealth people, moral and religious leaders, advocates, and people of conscience in this nation’s history. A global pandemic is exposing even more the already existing crisis of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, the war economy and militarism, and the distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism. On June 20, the 140 million poor and low-wealth people across this nation will be heard! WATCH the broadcasts on the #PoorPeoplesCampaign FB page: FB.com/anewppc & June 20 website: june2020.org The event will be rebroadcast on June 20th & 21st, at 6PM ET. The increasing urgency of a broad movement led by the poor and most impacted is more apparent every day. Now is the time to organize towards collective action to enact a moral agenda that lifts all people by challenging the interlocking injustices of systemic racism, poverty, militarism, ecological devastation, and the distorted moral narrative that ties it all together. The fact that there are 140 million poor and low-income people in the richest country in the history of the world is morally indefensible, constitutionally inconsistent, and economically disastrous. ***************** The broadcast on June 20th and June 21st will be interpreted into Spanish and ASL (American Sign Language) and will be open captioned in English. It is 20 degrees 🌬❄️ in DC today, but that doesn’t stop advocates and Members of Congress from standing up to the cruel U.S. Department of Agriculture Final Rule to cut #SNAP benefits for more than 700,000 recipients. The rule affects the ability of states to waive current limits on SNAP benefits. ✅ CURRENT LAW allows able-bodied adults without dependents, or ABAWDs, to receive benefits for a maximum of three months during a three-year period, provided they are working or enrolled in an education or training program for a minimum of 80 hours a month. States have been able to waive the time limit as people enter and leave the workforce. The rule allowed the waiver to apply even to counties where unemployment dropped as low as 2.5%. ⚠️ WHAT WILL CHANGE: The NEW rule restricts the waiver to counties with a minimum unemployment rate of 6%. This is particularly bad, because SNAP was created to expand and adjust when economic downturns happen. This new rule will defeat that purpose by taking away states' ability to waive its residents' time limit during hard times. For more details, visit theCenter on Budget and Policy Priorities https://www.cbpp.org/press/statements/new-snap-rule-would-cost-many-of-nations-poorest-their-food-aid 🆘 It is utterly unacceptable for the richest country on earth to have 15 million food-insecure households. Hunger is NOT a resource problem, hunger IS a PRIORITY problem. Unfortunately, USDA has its priority WRONG. Speaker: Sister Simone Campbell- ED of Network Advocates, CHN Board of Directors member
