While Washington is slowing down this week for a two-week spring recess, our advocacy on behalf of a human needs agenda never stops! ✊
1. Before adjourning for the recess, the Senate voted 92-7 to extend the #PPP or Paycheck Protection Program until the end of May, an important continuation of relief for #smallbusinesses facing economic hardship from a year of a suffering economy during COVID-19.
2️. A second batch of stimulus checks from the recently passed #AmericanRescuePlan are being distributed to eligible individuals and families this week in the form of both paper checks and debit cards. 💸
3. Proposals from Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Jimmy Gomez would make the wealthiest in America finally pay their fair share in taxes. If passed, these tax reforms could fully fund a human needs agenda including improving the affordability of health care for older Americans and people with disabilities, strengthen public education, make childcare affordable for working families, and more!

Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, helped organized, supported and spread the word for the DC Rally for Collective Safety: Protect Asian/AAPI Communities

We were shook and blown away by all the love, positivity, hope that people brought to this rally. It was truly a /safe/ place for everyone to grieve and to process what happened last week. But it was also the place where the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander called for unity, solidarity, and change. “We will not be the silent minority - nor the model majority!” The chant was heard loud and clear at the rally ground.

People from all walks of live came together- to show solidarity to the AAPI communities, and to amplify that intersectionality is key.
With our collective strength, we can defeat the common enemy of racism and violence.

We will continue to fight for:
✅ Robust reinvestment in our communities;
✅ Expansive and intersectional education at all levels;
✅ Urgently-needed sensible gun control;
✅ Recognizing the problem of homegrown white supremacist violence;
We could not afford another tragedy. We don't know all the answers; but we will NOT stop until everyone can feel safe at home, at work, and in their own country.

Thank you to all the organizers, and the sponsoring organizations:
OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates, National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF), Asian Americans Advancing Justice - AAJC, PIVOT - The Progressive Vietnamese American Organization,
Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF),
NAKASEC,
Community Justice Action Fund,
AAAFund, Korean Resource Center 민족학교 all the legal observers, medics, de-escalators, volunteers, speakers, organizers, drummers, artists, members of the press, and people who donate to make this event happen.

✊ In solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, we MUST come together. Join us OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates, Community Justice Action Fund, PIVOT - The Progressive Vietnamese American Organization, and many other advocates and activists this SUNDAY 1-2:30PM at the McPherson Square (15th and K St NW). Come make your sign with us at 1PM (materials provided), and stay for the rally at 1:30PM.

Tuesday's evening mass shooting was carried out by a white terrorist in Atlanta; and women of Asian descent were SIX of the EIGHT victims. That could have been our mothers, our sisters, our cousins, our family members. We could not afford another tragedy. We don't know all the answers; but we will NOT stop until everyone can feel safe at home, at work, and in their own country.

We will NOT stop fighting for:
✅ Robust reinvestment in our communities;
✅ Expansive and intersectional education at all levels;
✅ Urgently-needed sensible gun control;
✅ Recognizing the American homegrown white terrorism problem;
✅ Collective strength and allyship from all communities.

Again, in solidarity with the #AAPI community, we MUST come together. See you this Sunday.

Estimates of Cash Payment and Tax Credit Provisions in American Rescue Plan

Data from The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy shows how the #americanrescueplan provides targeted economic relief to the lowest income households in the form of cash payments and expansion of the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit. This direct relief would not have been possible without the work of our partners and coalition advocates fighting on behalf of the most vulnerable members of our communities! #helpisontheway

Update: On March 10, the House passed the Senate version of the COVID relief bill, called the American Rescue Plan Act, and sent it to President Biden for his signature. This means that the Senate version of the bill described herein is the final legislation enacted into law.

The past year has been a nightmare for working parents, disproportionately for women who often had to choose between work and caring for their kids. We must ease this conflict in times of crisis. Paid leave is the solution. Today on #InternationalWomensDay we celebrate all mothers who have confronted the difficulties of working and caring for children who are home from school during the pandemic. Working parents and their #KidsAreEssential. Visit kidsareessential.org today.

Lawmakers in the Senate are preparing to vote on the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 Relief package, or #TheAmericanRescuePlan. But The Senate GOP is doing everything it can to delay the vote, including reading the over 500-page bill out loud on the Senate floor. Then, the “vote-a-rama,” a marathon of voting on amendments proposed to the relief package, is expected to drag out the voting process further overnight and into the weekend.

This is not acceptable. American families devastated by COVID-19 cannot afford to wait any longer for relief. Call on your senators TODAY and demand that they stop playing games and pass the #AmericanRescuePlan without delay! Senate Democrats, Senator Mitch McConnell, Senator Chuck Schumer, Center For American Progress Action Fund

The House just passed a sweeping democracy reform package called #HR1 , The #ForThePeopleAct! 🎉In order for democracy to work for all of us, everyone must play by the same ethics rules, wealthy special interests cannot control our politics, and the right to vote must be protected for ALL!
The #ForThePeopleAct works to ensure that marginalized communities have fair and equitable access to full participation in our democracy.
Now the bill moves on to the Senate. TAKE ACTION and ☎️ your senator TODAY through the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Tell them to vote YES on the #ForThePeopleAct.

How can we make COVID-19 vaccine distribution more equitable?

The Biden Administration has declared an equitable vaccine rollout as a top priority, but a significant lack of data and bureaucratic barriers have impeded efforts so far.

“This is the biggest challenge that I’ve faced in my lifetime,” said Raymond Crowel, head of the Montgomery County Health and Human Services Department. “Am I daunted by it? No. But am I aware of how much of a challenge it’s going to be? Yes.”

The equitable distribution of vaccines is a top political and health priority, but even with widespread support this goal is easier said than done.

🥵 Even @gofundme is mad. Senators, pass the #AmericanRescuePlan now! Snowstorms, on top of power outage, on top of people facing evictions, on top of a pandemic IS NOT the time to care about the deficit.

⚠️ You should have cared about the deficit when the @senategop and @housegop passed the $1.9TRILLION tax cut in 2017, but NOT NOW!

📈 From 1979 to 2018, net productivity rose almost 70%, while the hourly pay of typical workers essentially stagnated—increasing around 12% over 39 years (after adjusting for inflation).
📉 This means that although Americans are working more productively than ever, the fruits of their labors have primarily accrued to those at the top and to corporate profits, especially in recent years.

🤨 Why this happened?
The income, wages, and wealth generated over the last four decades have failed to “trickle down” due to economy/taxation policies in the 1980s and early 2000s. In the contrary, it exacerbated inequality. The result has been wage stagnation, and greater inequality between the richest and the rest.

🤭 And how can we fix this?
According to Economic Policy Institute “First Day Fairness Agenda” and “Agenda to Raise America’s Pay, here are some of the things we need to do:
💪🏽 Restore workers’ bargaining power and ability to unionize.
👉🏽 Raising the minimum wage to a LIVING wage.
✅ Giving workers access to paid sick time, and family leave.
▶️ Making the workplace fair for women and people color: pay equality.
💰 Using the tax code to restain top 1 percent income #WealthTax
🔧 Supporting strong enforcement of labor standards.
