An esteemed group of panelists discussed the impact of on at OJJDP’s State and Tribal Relations and Assistance Division (STRAD) National Training Conference yesterday. Panelists included:

• Kyla Woods, Member, District of Columbia Youth Leaders in Action
Nicole Karem (JD ‘23) has externed with two organizations and done important and meaningful work as a part of the Field Placement Program. As a 2L, she externed with the Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ), where she analyzed laws pertaining to juvenile runaways and examined factors that place young people at increased risk for incarceration as adults. This semester, Nicole is externing with the The United States Department of Justice, Environmental and Natural Resources Division, Environmental Crimes Section, where she is conducting substantive and procedural research related on various environmental issues and Title18 of the US Criminal Code.
She says, “My Field Placement experience has strengthened my resume and made me more confident when applying to jobs.”

This afternoon, NJJN's Young Justice Leaders joined Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ) 's Emerging Leaders to present their policy recommendations to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Thank you to all of our incredible leaders for using your voice today!
As October comes to a close, we want to highlight the efforts of Congressman Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), Congresswoman Victoria Spartz (R-IN), and Congressman David Trone (D-MD), who introduced a bipartisan resolution designating October 2022 as National Youth Justice Action Month The resolution shines light on the collateral consequences youth face when they are treated as adults in the criminal justice system, and encourages the Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to prioritize rehabilitation and support over wasteful incarceration. Earlier this month, President Joe Biden proclaimed October 2022 to be National Youth Justice Action Month. U.S. Rep.
