𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗼 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆

The Clean Air Institute is currently supporting the Secretariat of the Environment of Mexico City (SEDEMA) in the design, deployment, and operationalization of the city's first network of low-cost air quality monitors.

Implemented with Breathe Cities, in collaboration with C40 Cities and the Clean Air Fund, the project will complement Mexico City's existing regulatory monitoring system by generating higher-resolution data to strengthen air quality analysis, inform territorial interventions, and help address air-quality-related health inequalities.

The project combines technical analysis, participatory processes, and institutional capacity building—from network design and site selection to procurement, installation, calibration, data validation, and knowledge transfer to SEDEMA.

By strengthening local monitoring capacity and enabling more actionable information, this work aims to support cleaner air, better-informed policies, improved public health, and greater climate resilience in Mexico City and beyond.

𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗔𝗛𝗢

On June 18, the 178th Executive Committee of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO-WHO) 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲'𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The decision was supported by a majority of Member States, who recognized the CAI's contributions to advancing evidence-based air quality and health policies across the region.

This resolution didn't happen overnight. Behind it are years of sustained collaboration with PAHO: technical projects, country-level assistance, participation in regional governance spaces, and contributions to policy frameworks addressing the health impacts of air pollution. That track record of systematic, committed work laid the foundation for this decision.

We are deeply grateful to the Member States that supported this recommendation and to the PAHO team for their trust in our work. We will continue contributing to the regional effort for clean air as a fundamental condition for health.

We welcome this important dialogue between the Centroamericana de Ambiente y Desarrollo (CCAD) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which highlights the growing integration of air quality, climate change, and public health across Central America and the Dominican Republic.

The 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲, 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 represents an important milestone for strengthening regional cooperation and advancing coordinated action across these interconnected agendas.

The United Nations Environment Programme, with support from the Clean Air Institute and in collaboration with partners across the region, has launched the 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀-𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵.

This new resource provides a practical framework to help governments, institutions, and organizations design effective communication and engagement strategies that strengthen public understanding of air pollution and its impacts on health and well-being.

The guide goes beyond information sharing. It offers tools and methodologies to:

✅ Communicate air quality issues more effectively.
✅ Raise awareness among different audiences.
✅ Promote meaningful public participation.
✅ Support evidence-based environmental and public health policies.

Structured around the 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 → 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 → 𝗢𝘄𝗻 approach, the guide helps practitioners identify audiences, develop tailored messages, and foster long-term engagement and action.

✅ 𝗔𝗠𝗩𝗔 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 (𝗣𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗖𝗔)

Nearly a decade ago, the Clean Air Institute joined the Área Metropolitana del Valle de Aburrá (AMVA) in designing the PIGECA 2017–2030 — one of the most comprehensive air quality management plans in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Today, five years before its implementation horizon, that plan is being updated. The AMVA and the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB) are leading a process that evaluates its achievements, integrates the region's climate change goals, and formulates new measures backed by emissions modeling, air quality analysis, and health impact projections.

We remain part of this journey, providing technical support in the development of new measures, health benefit projections, and the preparation of the updated plan document.

A new article published by the Environmental Defense Fund explains why Brazil’s new PRONAR could play a major role in improving air quality and reducing health risks across the country.

The analysis includes contributions from the Executive Director of the Clean Air Institute, who highlights the importance of strong implementation, technical capacity, and collaboration between governments, civil society, and experts to turn policy into real impact.
