A Message from Civic:

Civic stands with the families of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and all black lives that have been taken by racial violence, including police brutality. It is important in this time to not only call out the racial injustice seen in the disturbing images of violence against Black and LatinX Americans, but also the institutional racism present in our education system that manifests in equity gaps for students of color and play a significant role in perpetuating a system of racial oppression.

We are taking this time to educate ourselves, listen, reflect, and act to advance racial equity and social justice in all our work. We wholeheartedly support all those peacefully protesting across our nation, seeking change for ourselves and future generations, and pushing America to finally fulfill its promise of equal opportunity for all. Black lives matter.

Signed,
The Civic Team

The millions of young people forgotten amid pandemic response

"It is common for people to discount opportunity youth because some were recently homeless or involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare systems. But, as former domestic policy advisors to two presidents — one Democrat, one Republican — we work with many of them, side-by-side; recognize their potential, goals and contributions; and know a full recovery from this crisis will not occur without them."

Read Melody Barnes and John Bridgeland's op-ed: https://thehill.com/opinion/civil-rights/501099-the-millions-of-young-people-forgotten-amid-pandemic-response

During the current health and economic crisis, Congress has an important opportunity to double down and help millions of "Opportunity Youth," most of whom have been forgotten.

The 2020 graduation season in the time of COVID-19 looks a little bit different than years past. Opinion | Amid the coronavirus threat, where’s the call to service?

"In times of crisis, Americans expect our president to show empathy, to unite us and to ask us to help. Where idealism should be rooted, there is a hole at the heart of our nation’s coronavirus response."

COVID-19 Is Exposing the Gaps in Our Education System. Let's Start Fixing Them

In a new Education Week op-ed, John Bridgeland and Robert Balfanz write, "As COVID-19 spreads throughout America, urgent action is being taken at the federal, state, and local levels to support our health-care system and economy. But as schools shutter and millions of students attempt to learn from home or shelters, it is not too soon to think about what we can learn to strengthen our education system the next time there is a national crisis."

Schools are missing the digital contact information for far too many families. That's suddenly an urgent problem, write researchers Todd Rogers and Jessica Lasky-Fink.
