The founding meeting was attended by representatives from Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and California. SAC’s president and Council of Representatives (COR) were elected during that meeting.

More from SAC in Syria this summer — this time with Karam Foundation! 😎🇸🇾🚌

The SAC team joined Karam Foundation for a visit to schools undergoing rehabilitation, where we saw firsthand the work being done to restore learning environments for Syrian students.

The visit also included a stop at the Karam Caravan, a mobile innovation space providing students with educational resources, technology, and creative programming. Meeting the students and seeing these initiatives in action was a powerful reminder of the role education and innovation can play in Syria’s recovery.

SAC at the Democratic Retreat🇸🇾🇺🇸

SAC Board Members Dr. Zaki Lababidi, and Dr. Kholood Abed Chammaa, alongside SAC Policy Consultant Mohammed Alaa Ghanem and fellow Syrian American community leaders, met with members of Congress at a CA Democratic retreat to discuss Syria’s transition and share the perspectives and aspirations of the Syrian people.

The meetings focused on strengthening relationships and ensuring continued congressional support for Syria, the opportunities and challenges of this new chapter, and how Congress and the United States can continue supporting the Syrian people and promoting long-term stability.

Conversations also touched on the Administration’s notification to Congress initiating the process to remove Syria from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, as well as the possibility of congressional visits to Damascus to see the country’s evolving reality firsthand and hear directly from Syrians.

Continuing to build relationships, elevate Syrian voices, and keep Syria on the agenda in Washington. 🇸🇾🇺🇸

BREAKING: Bashar al-Assad sentenced to death in absentia.

A Syrian court has convicted Bashar al-Assad of premeditated murder, torture, arbitrary arrests, and crimes against humanity—the first legal conviction against the former president since the fall of his regime. His brother Maher al-Assad and former security official Atef Najib were also sentenced to death.

For Syrian families who have spent years demanding answers and accountability, no verdict can undo what was lost or erase the suffering endured under Assad’s rule. But today’s ruling marks a significant moment in Syria’s pursuit of justice.

The Syrian American Council remains committed to supporting a Syria where justice is upheld, victims are heard, and those responsible for crimes against the Syrian people are held accountable.🇸🇾

More from SAC in Syria This Summer 🚌🇸🇾💚

While the SAC delegation was in Syria this summer, we met with the leadership of the National Transitional Justice Commission and the Governor of Suwayda for conversations on some of the priorities and challenges facing Syria today.

Our meeting with the National Transitional Justice Commission focused on its priorities and ongoing efforts to advance transitional justice in Syria, including the importance of accountability and justice as essential pillars of Syria’s long-term recovery and reconciliation.

In our meeting with the Governor of Suwayda, we discussed the evolving situation in the governorate and ongoing efforts to restore stability and social peace, with a focus on dialogue, community engagement, and initiatives that can contribute to a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the challenges facing the region.

These were important conversations during our time in Syria, and we look forward to continuing the engagement. 🇸🇾

A new opportunity to help shape Aleppo’s future. 🇸🇾💚

Following recent meetings in Aleppo, the Syrian American Council, in partnership with the U.S.-Syria Business Council (US-Syria Business Council) , is convening a virtual briefing on investment opportunities supporting the development of Aleppo’s new Medical City.

This conversation will introduce Syrian American professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors to a project aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure and supporting long-term economic recovery in Syria.

Final Stop: Damascus 🚌🇸🇾

Our journey concluded in Damascus, the world’s oldest continuously inhabited capital city. On the evening of our arrival, participants gathered for a closing dinner that brought together guests from a wide range of backgrounds, including government officials, civil society representatives, and community leaders. The evening featured a performance by the Mawlawiyya (Whirling Dervishes), a centuries-old Sufi tradition that remains an important part of Damascus’ cultural heritage.

The following morning, participants who wished to join had the opportunity to explore the Old City of Damascus, including visits to the Umayyad Mosque, Al-Azm Palace, and several of the city’s most treasured historic landmarks, experiencing firsthand the heritage that has shaped Damascus for centuries.

Damascus was more than the final stop on our journey—it was the perfect conclusion to a road trip that celebrated Syria’s diversity, honored its history, and brought together Syrians from different backgrounds with a shared commitment to the country’s future.

Fifth Stop: Maaloula, Jubb’adin & Saydnaya 🚌🇸🇾

This stop reflected another side of Syria—one that captures both the depth of its history and the weight of its recent past.

We began our visit in Maaloula and Jubb’adin, two of only three villages in the world where Western Neo-Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus, continues to be spoken today. These communities stand as living reminders of Syria’s extraordinary cultural heritage and rich religious diversity.

We concluded the day at Saydnaya Prison, a place that has become one of the most powerful symbols of the atrocities committed under the Assad regime. Its walls serve as a reminder that rebuilding Syria requires more than reconstruction—it also requires preserving memory, pursuing justice, and ensuring that such crimes are never be repeated.

This stop reminded us that Syria’s story is one of extraordinary heritage, profound resilience, and an enduring hope for a better future.

Fourth Stop: Homs 🚌💚

And there was so much more from Homs.

Our journey through Homs — often regarded as the capital of the Syrian Revolution — was a reminder that rebuilding is about more than restoring buildings. It is about strengthening communities, preserving memory, and moving forward together.

We visited the Khalid ibn al-Walid Mosque and the Church of Saint Mary’s Holy Belt — known as Umm al-Zinnar — powerful symbols of Homs’ rich history and the importance of preserving Syria’s diverse social fabric.

We also met with the Governor of Homs to discuss recovery efforts, peaceful coexistence, and the role the Syrian diaspora can play in supporting the city’s future.

And of course — the moment we already shared. Meeting Umm Abdul Baset al-Sarout in her home. A moment that stayed with all of us long after we left.

Homs does not let you go easily. And we would not have it any other way. 🇸🇾

Fourth Stop: Homs 🚌💚

We want to take a moment to highlight one of the most touching moments of our entire journey.

In Homs, we had the profound honor of visiting Umm Abdul Baset al-Sarout at her home — the mother of Abdul Baset al-Sarout, the voice and icon of the Syrian revolution.

A woman who lost all five of her sons, her husband, and five siblings to the revolution. And who received us with warmth and grace 💚🇸🇾🥹

For our Executive Director, our board members, and everyone present — this was a moment none of us will forget.

Third Stop: Hama 🚌🇸🇾💚

Our journey continued to Hama—a city long remembered for its resilience and its enduring place in Syria’s modern history.

We explored Hama’s historic old city and visited its iconic Norias, which have stood along the Orontes River for centuries as enduring symbols of the city’s identity. Surrounded by lush greenery and the peaceful riverfront, Hama offered a glimpse into both Syria’s rich heritage and its natural beauty.

Beyond its landmarks, it was the warmth of the people and the city’s renowned cuisine that made this stop especially memorable.

Hama reminded us that even after decades of hardship, resilience can still be found in the places, traditions, and people who continue to shape Syria’s future.
